Forums - Gaming - Why I am now finding story-driven games to be awesome.

You can track down posts in the past of mine, where I end up putting down story-driven games.  I do still feel games are games, but I now see a BIG advantage games played for the story have, thinking on it further.

I find them awesome, because I can go on YouTube, watch the ending, and not have to bother even playing the game.  I get all the draw of them, without actually having to spend money.   It has worked well to save me a bunch of money.  I am a fan of Mass Effect series, and seeing the endings on YouTube saved me the need to spent money, taking out a compulsion to buy.  Same happened with Uncharted 3, and Deus Ex.  Unlike games that end up being games, I don't have to actually play them, to get the effect of playing them.  And that is a big plus for me.  I now can keep up with things for no charge.

If there is need for me to follow any more regarding the story, there are other clips to watch to.  So, I am fortunately that games with stories enable me to do this.  And if I really do end up getting the games, I can wait a long to to get them and actually play them.

You forgot this: ?

That's what I did for Uncharted 3. Game has a great Story but to me it's gameplay is to linear. But with the power of Youtube I've been able watch the story withought having to buy or play it. I might do the same for Tomb Raider.

I'm an advocate for motion controls, Nintendo, and Kicking freaking Toad to the Moon!

I'd consider the games you listed to be gameplay-driven. You seem to be hatin on games simply because they have stories. I can understand this philosophy when the gameplay is bad. But when the gameplay is good, like with the games you've listed, you look like you don't like stories for no good reason.

So, I guess the title is a rhetorical question then?

Ahem. Youtube brought me to this kind of games as well (namely: Dead Space) but I think it's very different with horror games. Sure, Dead Space is completely linear and never has any loading screens/interruptions (just like a movie), but to actually experience the horror you need to be there controlling the character. Uncharted is more of an action movie, from what I have seen and heard, so youtube should be enough to 'unjustify' the purchase.

I would never watch uncharted on youtube because it kills the interactive movie part of the game. Same with heavy rain.

The OP seems to think that the story in those games are their most important or best asset.

what you explain is a good point for some "games". even when i opened the beyond thread i don't really see a reason to buy that for 60 bucks just to push some buttons and listen to a story. because i can buy a book with a great story or watch more than one movie for the same price which looks even better than beyond graphics. because this looks really real then and it seems like beyond developers try exactly this, to look exactly like a movie with real actors. i wonder why they don't make a movie instead of a game with worse graphics to simulate a movie.

but there are games which are still real games and have a good story. not many but as example i believe the last of us will be good for both even if it will be a little bit too linear and he will kill the enemies from close range just with a button click and the whole animation will be scripted then (not sure about that but the fight with the guy on the ground didn't look like you could control it and if it is a new kind of controls i'm really looking forward to play with these controls).

You got to play them through. If you watch the endings on youtube it's like skipping to the last few pages of book. Wheres the fun and sense of achievement?

Consider this reality: I do not have the money to buy games hardly ever now.  I particularly don't when it comes to single player games you play through for the story.  Out of want to see how it goes, I ended up going increasingly to YouTube to look at the likes of Infamous 2, and the others I mention. I find out how it ends, watch some videos online, and read trailers, and don't feel a need to buy them.  Unles game-games, where you get a lot of replayability and the idea is to master them, I find I get nearly the same from just watching the trailers on YouTube, and find out what else is going on.

Heck, for me it isn't just videogames I do this, that are story-driven.  For me, I also go to themoviespoiler.com and see the entire story of movies, so I don't need to watch them.  Yes, call me cheap, but that is what I have been reduced to at this point.  Everything else is for necessity.

I am so strapped, I am hoping to get some additional cash in and get Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 somewhere along the lines here.  That is about it for me.
