This horrible possibility occurred to me as well, but it is so distasteful that I tried to pretend that it didn't.

Lol, I know. I've been thinking about this for a while, as soon as the latest rumours appeared I remember those statements from Gaikai, but I put the thoughts aside.

But the idea never left my mind so...

I think they might put the service on their console,(and other products such as tv's) but I don't think they would stop making consoles and sell regular games. Just consider it another subscription service possibility. Like music unlimited or netflix in some countries.

I predict, that do to the financial situations in Japan and another company wanting to break into the console market, they will join forced with another company and the PS4 will be called: "Snapple."

Acutally, I'm supposed to be kidding, but we will have to see...

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

I am actually pretty sure there is going to be a PS4, and no it won't be online streaming.

Also they haven't pulled of from the TV market what makes you think they will pull off from the gaming console market?

This is me talking: Sony is releasing a PS4.

But unfortunately my instinct is that MS will get another head start.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

who knows...sure it wasn't their plan some years ago but maybe the time has come they realized that they are good in making games and maybe it is better for them just developing games for other consoles and working together with gaikai or what the name is. yes, many don't have fast enough internet, me included, but better half the amount of possible customers and profiting as double the amount and losing money.

not releasing a ps4 could mean few years longer lifetime for ps3 as we all believe and they can invent gaikia to get people used to it and then in some years they will go full 3rd party.

I really don't see them going third party. Not with the market the way it is now.

They would lose out on hundreds of millions in royalties, online subsciption fees and sales of excessories. The PS3 has, despite it's poor beginning, put them in a much better position to tackle the next generation. They've created  an online network that has gone through it's teething phase, strengthened their first party studios, increased their IP portfolio and increased communication links with their customers.

Sony controlled the market for about 12 years, if they insist on keeping a flailing money-losing tv division afloat,  PS hardware is unlikely to go anywhere.

This has just the right amount of desperation to be true. I think there is a bit too much denial at play in these forums. The truth is Sony is losing the war. They are in a technological arms race at a time when the company is losing much of the money that it needs to wage that war. They can't simply eat the losses that they did this generation, but they would have to if they are going to meet the challenge presented by Microsoft's new hardware.

I know there is a absurd logic at play that says Sony can scale back the architecture in a new machine. So that they do not need to loss lead in a new generation. The obvious flaw in that logic being that Microsoft has no real incentive to not go over the top. Not only could they afford to do so, but they have proven that they can be very profitable while doing so. The reality whether many on here want to acknowledge it or not is that the power that is under the hood matters. Especially when the price points are the same.

Rest assured that the majority of the market that Microsoft and Sony are sharing would swing to the provider that is competitively priced, but overwhelmingly more powerful. Most on these forums would do exactly the same thing for that matter. I watched this generation as most ardent Sony lovers on these forums quietly slunk off to buy 360s. A quiet acknowledgment that Microsoft could swing the development community to their side.

The point I am getting at is Sony can't replay this generation losing billions in the process, and they can't go the other route either. That would lead to players abandoning the product line in droves. Sony thinking laterally might find some real profit from joining the cloud. It would make a whole lot of sense. The hardware is what is breaking the bank not the software.

You have a penchant for melodrama.

As for the competition and pricing. In such an event that Sony release a cheaper console and MS decide to push the technological limits, MS would most likely have to sell hardware at a substantial loss to match the price of Sony's less powerful machine. I think you would be mistaken in thinking that in that situation Sony would have no room, or indeed leave no room to manouver.

Furthermore, there may be anti-competitive laws that would prohibite them from simply producing a high end machine and matching it with the price of an entry-to-mid level system from Sony. Especially if there is an aim to force them from the market.

maybe i didn't say what i mean. i meant that sony could buy gaikai or get a part of their income and then they make money with this as well.

Playstation 3 will be the PS4. New OS.
