It popularized (or maybe even was the first to do) havoc physics, and is probably still the best game at implementing them. It pushed graphics incredibly far for it's time utilizing many new techniques like simulating how the eye reacts to darkness and pioneering some techniques for doing realisic water, as well as other stuff. It was a technical marvel when it was brand new, console gamers could only look in awe.
It also had incredible level design, where the physics were being used for puzzles in very clever ways, with enemies that could either be really smart and tactical, or dumb, or in between.
It launced the source engine, that was used as recently as the Left 4 Dead games, and was used for classics like CS: Source and Team Fortress 2.
And don't tell me that spearheading the Steam service was not revolutionary.
The game broke more ground than anything Nintendo ever produced since after the N64.
