Forums - Nintendo - IF Nintendo does not impress at E3 this year will Nintendo fail in the West? Change of opinion now?

Nintendo's fate hangs in the balance. The Wii-U is Nintendo's last hope for survival. If it fails then Nintendo will either go third party or shut it's doors and bury all existance of it's IP's.

Not even close.  Nintendo has plenty of money and resources to survive the 8th gen, even if the WiiU ends up selling like the Dreamcast.

This fate doesn't depend on the core gamer but instead it depends on the casual gamers i.e. Soccer moms, and kids. Why? Because Nintendo has never had the core gamer market and never will! And the reason for this is simple, they didn't create the core gamer market Sony did.

Sony broadened the core market, but core gamers existed before the Playstation.  And Nintendo had plenty of these games from 3rd parties on the NES and SNES.  Games like Contra, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Final Fantasy, etc.  These are all "core" games.

The Playstation brought in a whole new demographic of gamers when it was released, Just like the Wii did. But  unlike the Wii these new gamers weren't moms, dads, or the elderly, Nope they are now whats called the mainstream core gamers. The jocks, teenagers, and adults who otherwise would of never played games. Just look the the SNES and Genesis, these systems catered to Kids and nerds, The mascotts were an Italion plumber and a super fast hedgehog, The games pretty much all had a heavy japanes/anime style that appealed to the kids and nerds. They're weren't any games that attracted adults/jocks.

Playstation appealed to these people. Games like Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, GTA and the tons of realistic sports sims, for them these games were mature, featuring volience and adult themes and were ok for them to play because they weren't considered childish or nerdy.

So, jocks (plenty of which played Madden and Sega Sports games), adults (SMB, Pac Man, Tetris) and teens (Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat and a laundry list of others) didn't care about games before the Playstation?  The market was clearly in its infancy back with the NES/SNES; don't mistake that with entire groups of people shunning games because they only appealed to "kids" and "nerds".

Despite what Nintendo Fans tell you. Nintendo games are Kiddy! They are meant to appeal to kids and it really isn't hard to see that. The average adult gamer doesn't brag that Super Mario bros is his favorite game because in society that is considered to be childish behaviour unfitting of an adult.

An Adult stating that his favorite video game series is Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, Kirby, etc. Is like an Adult saying his favorite TV show is Spongebob Squarepants. This adult would be looked down upon for liking a childrens show because his favorite show should be something that's for adults not kids.

You're confusing adults with teens who are image conscious.  There are plenty of adults who are not at all embarassed to admit that they play Mario because they've largely outgrown the phase where they worry about what people think.  And a game like Mario transcends age.

Unless Nintendo releases an Mature rated Mario game they will never appeal to the core gamers.

Nintendo doesn't have to appeal to them themselves, as long as they have strong support from the companies that do; just like they did with the NES and SNES.

When Nintendo states that they're going after the hardcore gamer they mean they're going after the Nintendo fans who abandoned them and either went to Microsoft or Sony. Because no gamer who's been playing their Playstation 1-3 or Xbox -360 is seriously going to jump onto the Wii-U. They didn't jump on the N64, sure as hell didn't jump into the gamecube, and didn't jump into the Wii.

This, I will agree, remains to be seen.

Just look at the 3ds, The reason it's not doing so hot is because it's games all are trying to appeal to the core gamers instead of the casuals and Nintendo fans.

I will half agree here as well.  There's nothing wrong with appealing to the core, as long as it's not at the expense of a broader market.

So Wii-u is relying on the kids and casuals to buy it up. If Nintendo fails to get them then we can expect to be playing Nintendo games on the Iphone, Xbox 720, PC, and PS4 or sadly not at all.

Again, very over dramatic with your conclusion.  Even if WiiU is not the success they hope it to be, it hardly means that the company will have to throw in the towel and resort to 3rd party developing or not developing at all.  Even with the modest sales of the Gamecube, Nintendo remained profitable.  WiiU not being a smash hit does not mean the company is instantly doomed.

Really I'm 34 years old and those are my favorite game series. As for Sponge Bob I know of several 20-somethings at my work that love the show.

I would be one of those people :>

3DS isn't doing bad in the west, it's selling decently considering that it's still priced much higher than the DS was at this point in its life span (traditionally, handhelds that sell at $150 or more haven't done very well in the West... *cough* Lynx, Game Gear, PSP, PSV *cough*).

And on the software side of things, the software tie ratio of handhelds is traditionally much lower than consoles, and with the system still being very early in its life cycle and both the PS3 and 360 still selling well this late in their cycles, why would anyone expect 3DS titles to routinely make the top 10 in sales in the west?

Also, it would be REALLY hard for Nintendo to have as bad of an E3 press conference as 2003's. If Nintendo comes out and just shows Pac-Man Vs. in HD for the Wii U and that's it, then yes, they are doomed lol.

To be honest, I know quite a few adults that claim cartoons as their favorite movie/tv show. My dad's favorite show is Loonie Toons. I have several adult friends who claim the Lion King is their favorite movie. And most women my age that I know claim Super Mario to be their favorite game. Adults love Wii Sports.

I wouldn't call Nintendo games "Kiddy" I would call them family games. Targeted at all ages.

1. Nintendo may have a lot of money in the bank, but compared to their competition it's lot a drop in the bucket. If the Wii-U does terrible and fails Nintendo's stock will plummet. Apple, Microsoft, or Sony could buy up Nintendo's stock and hostilily take over Nintendo. Nintendo's competitiors are massive multi-billion dollar companies, with a ton of power. Were talking some of the biggest businesses in the world! Nintendo despite being successful this last gen is no longer the king of gaming. Their kingdom has been usurped by much more powerful companies.Like it or not Sony, Microsoft, and Sony run the video game world now.

2. The core market has changed since the NES and SNES. I do agree that those were core games back in the day, but by todays standard they're more niche and only kept alive by nostalgic fans. I mean the core gamers of today are playing COD, Gears of War, Uncharted, Assasin's Creed, Bioshock, and GTA, they really don't care about games like Contra, Mega Man, Mortal Kombat, Castlevania, and the many others. Today those games are to Japanese and Anime and the only reason the media talks up those games is because of what I like to the "Grandfather effect' Where in the game used to be the cool thing and mainstream so its ok to still like it because it's old school.

Pretty much all Nintendo games are given this benefit. If the Legend of Zelda series never existed and Skyward Sword was the first Zelda game ever created it would have been torn up by the gaming media. The only reason Zelda can still be considered cool is because of it's past accomplishments. I mean do you really think any current day gamer would embrace this new series, where the main hero was a metro sexual looking guy who doesn't talk and lives in a fantasy world in the sky? The fact that skyward sword doesn't have any voice acting alone would make the game receive a ton of critism, but it doesn't because of it's lineage. The gaming media gives it a pass.

3. Oh there were jocks, adults, and teens who played the SNES and Sega Genisis, The Playstation just brougth in a lot more of them and made them the focus of the Playstation. Due to the Playstations media capabilites with CD technoligies games could become more realistic and life like. The sports games changed from more arcadesy to more Simulation and trying to emulate real life. They're were now in game cutscenes and the games started to shift from a more cartoon/fantasy setting to a more realistic setting.

The PS sold over 100 Million units worldwide and the SNES only sold 49 million. The core market started to change when the PS was released and it marks the birth of the modern core gamer. So there were a lot of people who shunned those games "50 million" and to further prove my point just look at the N64's sales 32 million, So a lot of gamers left Nintendo during that time meaning that aprox 70 million gamers were more interested PS then the N64. Only Kids and Nintendo fans bought and played the N64 because the core market Sony created didn't want anything to do with them

4. I agree that there are some adults who aren't image conscious and love Nintendo games. Heck I'm 25 and my favorite series is the Legend of Zelda. Thing is a lot of Adults won't admit to playing Nintendo games unless they have an excuse. For example I Know a ton of adult gamers who justify playing Mario by stating things such as, I own a 360/PS3 but the Wii is for my GF/Wife/KIds so I like to play Mario games with them. You obviously play Bioshock and own either/or PS3 Xbox 360 so you can easily just say " I love Mario games but I also play Bioshock, GTA etc." Thus by saving face. An adult can watch cartoons as long as he/she also watches adult shows. The Adult who only watches cartoons and plays kiddy games like Mario is looked down upon by society.

5. That's the thing though. Nintendo can't rely on 3rd party support because they will simply ditch them when the next Xbox and PS4 come out. You said it yourself Nintendo hasn't had good reliable 3rd party support since the NES and SNES era. Nintendo at best will just get ports of 3rd party games and Microsoft and Sony will always get the better games. So it doesn't matter if GTA 5 will come to the Wii-U because it will be on the other consoles and the core gamers won't go out a buy a pathetic and gimmicky Nintendo system to play them.

6. Yup Nintendo can only hope to get back those that they lost.

7. I should have been more specific. The 3DS has been marketed toward the core crowd but has horribly failed. Oh it's been successful but that's thanks only to Nintendo's die hard fans, not the core crowd. Just look at Resident Evil Revelations it sold terribly here in the states and yet Operation Raccoon City sold much better then it. The core gamer hates Nintendo and RE Revelations in just one example of it. They would rather buy a terrible 3rd person shooter then game on an Nintendo console. Nintendo is a poisenous cancer ridden disease that has infected their gaming industry with stupid gimmicks, underpowered hardware, and motion controls. That's what the media and core gamers believe.

8. Why are there so many Nintendo is Doomed articles and threads then? Are all these analyst and journalist really wrong or is there truth to what they say. Or we Nintendo fans just clinging on to a dream world and shunning reality?

The gamers of today hate the Wii! Just look at how the gaming media treats it. If someone didn't know any better they would think that the Wii was a massive failure. This system has brought the core gamers nothing but anguish and pain. Their weren't gimmicky things like motion controls, touch screen gaming, and Kinect until Nintendo introduced the Wii. The Wii is the cause of all the problems for the core gamers. It has terrible hardware, horrific online and it's games are a joke. It's a childs toy, a soccer Mom's workout machine, and a Nintendo's fans nostalgic fueled, over milked franchise spewing machine that is enarmored with releasing another another Mairo and Zelda game. Nintendo is a poisen to the industry. A malignant cancer that must be stopped before it can grow and destroy any more of gaming.

Core games won't be fooled by Nintendo again, they won't pick up a Wii-U, they won't be suckered in by Nintendo again. They won't support Nintendo's radical departure from traditional gaming. The gaming media and community are fed up with Nintendo influencing and destroying their industry and eagerly await the rapidly approaching day that Nintendo admits defeat. The day when Reggie's body is not ready and Iwata has the bomb dropped on him!

I'm an advocate for motion controls, Nintendo, and Kicking freaking Toad to the Moon!

1. Not touching that one.

2. Funny that this "benifit of the doubt" somehow turns into a lot of sales for the different Mario series and Zelda games.

3. The Wii is currently at 95 Million.

4. This is common when a Man is trying to prove he is manly for any type of entertainment. Some men like romance comedies, but they will talk about an action movie to justify that they are still manly. Many guys will list video games as a hobby, but will talk about an outdoor activity afterwards. This is really only matters to people who lack confidence in themselves and need to justify something they feel they should be ashamed of.

5. Not sure you can call it gimicky if you haven't tried it. 3rd parties wanted to support the Wii more, but they want to develope a game for all three platforms at the same time. But in the Wiis case they had to build games from the ground up for it instead of porting. But 3rd parties that developed to the Wii strength were able to do well.

6. They also gained so many new people with the Wii. A new generation of kids.

7. Your compairing Apples and Oranges. A game for two console that has been out 5+ years and a year old portable device.

"Nintendo is a poisenous cancer ridden disease that has infected their gaming industry with stupid gimmicks, underpowered hardware, and motion controls. That's what the media and core gamers believe." - Such bitterness and hate.

8. The media also screams doom and gloom about Sony and Microsoft all of the time. And Facebook and Amazon and Apple and on and on.

"The Wii is the cause of all the problems for the core gamers. It has terrible hardware, horrific online and it's games are a joke. It's a childs toy, a soccer Mom's workout machine, and a Nintendo's fans nostalgic fueled, over milked franchise spewing machine that is enarmored with releasing another another Mairo and Zelda game. Why you mad, bro? Seriously take a chill pill. Nintendo hasn't destroyed anything. Have you seen a slowdown in great AAA games in the industry? The only thing I have seen since the Wii came out was an increase in the types of games available to us. Traditional games are my bread and butter, but I also enjoy a lot of motion controlled/touch screen games.
