Forums - Gaming - John Carmack: “lots of 30hz games” in the next gen

Tagged games:

30fps + motion blur feels good in console shooters.

45fps (god of war 3) felt very close to 60fps.

45fps seems great to me, it's noticeably better than 30, but it frees up more resources than 60. This seems like a great compromise to me, why does nobody discuss 45fps being the standard? Why is it always 30 or 60? (genuinely curious)

60fps for life! 30fps are good only for slow-paced games.

I thinks it is because TVs refresh is 60Hz, so you see either 1 image per second (60fps/60Hz) or twice the same image per second (30fps/60Hz).

Please excuse my bad English.

in that prepective... yes... but now, he is far from those days... Quake I and II was awesome, but after that... nothing worth of that kind of status IMO.

Einstein is a legendary physicist, he is dead now and technically ended his career in a failure. He earned his status what he does now can't really change that.

Saying 30 hz instead of 30 fps is the biggest fail of Carmack's career.

I'm pretty sure Carmack wouldn't make such an obvious mistake, I think he's referring to the game-world running in 30 Hz, ie. not just the interval between frames, but also the animations, logic, physics, input and so on.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

30 hz is the sweet spot unless it's multiplayer. If I have a PC game I always tune it to 30 fps if there's more graphics options to crank up.

Bottom line is that we rather have the better graphics that come with 30 fps instead of 60 fps.

I am a hardcore fan of a 60fps standard across the board. But it all comes down to a simple matter of opinion if you agree with me or not.

Graphics are all-encompassing of what one sees visually. Instead of developers sacrificing a smooth gaming experience for a few higher-res textures, they could just as easily contribute more time and effort to the art design of their game (which is my strong preference). In my opinion, the frame rate has just as much to do with graphical prowess than does anything else that is on your screen.

It's a balancing act, really. If developers decide to drop frames in favor of better textures, effects, etc., they have every right to. And in that case, those guys/gals making that particular game see it as a 'better' gaming experience. So that being said, I don't think there should be a standard set in place just for people that see things the same way as myself. I do hope, though, that more developers next generation will promote a smoother gaming experience by way of higher frame rates.

I would like to note that I see a marked difference at 60fps in any and every type of game, making the experience more enjoyable no matter what I'm playing.

important for racing games and first person shooters for me (if you play battlefield with over 60fps and after a while you play it with 30 fps it feels bad (at least for me))

but i don't need uncharted or so with 60fps, 30fps and therefore better graphics makes more sense for such a game.

30 FPS is indeed good if your PC can't handle 60 FPS with all the bells and whistles enabled. I prefer the higher FPS though over slightly higher anti-aliasing.

You are right. There are indeed some graphics options I wouldn't max instead of trying to achieve a higher framerate (60ish). I am usually perfectly fine with 4xAA and 8xAF.

Man I'd love to see Uncharted at 60 FPS but know that I never will. ND, develop for PC gosh darn it!

Edit: Actually, I will when a PS3 emulator is made...possibly

Didn't they release a video showing UC3 running at 60fps, I seem to remember seeing it on digital foundry

EDIT: Found it http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-what-if-uncharted-3-ran-at-60-fps
