Banning guns won't eradicate them at all. I'm in the UK, where guns have been heavily restricted for quite some time, and yet illegal gun factories are still all over the place... one was shut down nearby me a while ago.

Plus, you've already got millions of guns across the country... waht, you're going to force everybody in the nation to hand their guns in? Not going to happen. Even so, criminals will just use the southern border, or the Gulf coast. It's physically impossible to "ban" guns.

Also, Chicago had a handgun ban in place for 30 years, and crime rates increased. I think the ban was recently lifted, due to a Supreme Court ruling, let's see how the trends go over the next few years.

In the UK, if somebody tries to mug me, I have literally no defence. We're told to just hand our stuff over to the mugger, and then inform the police. In reality, the police rarely catch such criminals.

The muggers don't follow the law, so they already have weapons, and yet the people who a law abiding citizens are left defenceless.

If not a mugger and me, why not a woman protecting herself from a rape? I wonder how many women would worry about walking down a secluded area at night, if they had a handgun in their bag?

Statistically, what I'm saying actually is confirmed. Over half of criminals in the UK, who were caught after a burglary said that they didn't care if the owner was in. This figure is actually 13% in the USA. Because criminals know that a home owner in the USA is far more able to defend themselves.

In fact, criminals in the USA actually worry more about the home owner being in the house, than they do about the police.

But it's not just common criminals, the right to arms is fundamental for liberty. This is the main reason why the founders granted it. The American Revolution wouldn't have been possible without gun rights, and the colonies under the tyranny of the King would have remained. Before Hitler moved the Jews into concentration camps, or even the Night of Long Knives, he first passed legislation that disarmed many Jewish communities. After the pro-democracy protests in T. Square, China, the Chinese Government's first actions were to effectively remove all guns. Because they knew how dangerous an armed population is for tyrants. They know how much easier it is to displace, torture, imprison, and kill the citizenry when they are defenceless.

These are my reasons for believing in gun rights.

Right, but if someone gets caught in a scenario where both guys have guns, it's likely someone's going to die. Frankly i'd rather be robbed than kill someone. It also prevents nuts like George Zimmermann, who whether he was defending himself or not shouldn't have been there with that gun in the first place.

Except the facts and stats all show that this doesn't happen. What really happens is that there are just fewer muggings, because the criminals fear that the the target may have a gun. The same goes for house burglaries in places with strict gun rights.

I love it when foreigners get so involved in politics around our election season!!!

Edit: In Mormon runned Utah, alcohol is practically illegal, but you can have multiple wives so it is a nice trade off.

I need to find the statistic, but in 98% of cases where the victim brandishes a firearm, the situation is resolved without violence or robbery. I would say that the huge offset to the possibility of someone dying is that far less attacks occur in aggregate, which likely leads to less deaths overall. This would be correlated with the fact that the states with more guns have less murders and killings, despite greater proliferation of legal firearms.

And thats not to speak of the fact that licenses firearm holders have about a 5% chance of ever comitting a crime when compared to the state averages where CCW permits are given.
