This article was just made to grab hits. Move along people, it's taken way out of context. PS3 was not a failure, and anyone who says it was is out of their mind. Failures are not the most popular console every week of the year (except a few holiday weeks).

Failures are stuff like the Karate Kid's movie career or Rebecca Black

Ah yes, because helping your company lose billions for  six years straight and dropping their value from 100bil to 17bil is a success if I ever saw one

Don't be silly...

I know the truth hurts, but I Sony pull it together

You know, Sony dropping in value is almost completely irrelevant to the PS3. So why you bring it up is beyond me

It's not Irrelevant it's common knowledge that the PS3 is one of the many reasons Sony's value dropped. I mean it lost more money than the entire PS2 generation gained. http://www.1up.com/news/sony-lost-ps3-ps2

They also lost money on PSN. http://www.1up.com/news/hirai-psn-losing-money-turn

These are all true, unless you are trying to convince me that Sony losing Billions from the PS3 has nothing to do with their value drop.

sonys ultimate goal is to profit. as much as i like the ps3 it has overall lost money. therefore it is a failure so far. simple

Yeah, compared to the PS2, it is a failure.

But then again, compared to the PS2 every other console is also a failure.

Why don't we compare it to other 3rd place consoles across other generations? I'd say it's pretty damn successful.

No, its not just a failure compared to PS2. Sony is in the business to make a profit, which all past Playstation consoles did. PS3 did not make a profit. Worst of all, it appears PS3 potentially lost more money than the Playstation brand ever earned. You're in bizarro world if you don't consider that failure.

Nobody cares how other 3rd place consoles performed in past gens. More importantly, they didn't lose $5 billion in the process.

In those terms yes,I don't think anyone can dispute that, but overall it's been a decent success.

In a virtual tie for second worldwide, and in second almost everywhere outside of N.America. Compared to the PS2 sales it is a let down, but overall hardly a failure. Analysts trolling for attention.

Or better yet, why compare it to any console at all? Why not look at it's own install base, profitability, etc to determine if it's a success/failure.

Using your advice, we'd only prove that the PS3 is the most successful failure. That's analogous to being the healthiest person with super obesity.

The thing is thogh you don't want to compare it to its profitability because then it is a for sure failure.  The PS3 has yet to post enough profit to recoup its MASSIVE losses early on and in fact is heading in the opposit direction with the Playstation division of Sony just recently posting yet another loss in Sony's most recent financials.

The PS3 is an awesome system, with some great games and for gamers they system hasn't been a failure at all.  However to Sony from a financial decision the console has been a huge failure.

Completely depends who is looking at it.

They as a company, and industry analysts, will see it as a failure because of the huge loss they made by selling it.

We as consumers can see it as a mild success because it has caught up to its closest competitor (in terms of HD consoles) with a year's less time selling. And it's produced some pretty damn good experiences, for me at least!

As long as Sony don't go into the next generation trying to make an all-in-one does everything console which is ridiculously priced (as they did with the PS3) then I think they'll be alright.

@Bolded. That's my point.

On a gamer level: no
