Using your advice, we'd only prove that the PS3 is the most successful failure. That's analogous to being the healthiest person with super obesity.

The thing is thogh you don't want to compare it to its profitability because then it is a for sure failure.  The PS3 has yet to post enough profit to recoup its MASSIVE losses early on and in fact is heading in the opposit direction with the Playstation division of Sony just recently posting yet another loss in Sony's most recent financials.

The PS3 is an awesome system, with some great games and for gamers they system hasn't been a failure at all.  However to Sony from a financial decision the console has been a huge failure.
