It was a difficult game.
If its the original, its just insanely hard. Easily among the top 5 hardest games I've ever played.
The original PoP was extremely hard. The difficulty and the look of the game are what turned it into a cult classic. I personally don't think that the controls were bad for the time, but they would be difficult to struggle with now.

Nope, if you ever bothered to try out NES games, you would know that good controls already existed back then.
The NES was huge back then. But for everything that is highly popular, there will be a counter-culture. Prince of Persia is a counter-culture classic. It was one of the better non-NES games at that time (it eventually made its way to the NES though). It's similar to a lot of Sega Genesis/Mega Drive games that are considered classics. Many of them are just because they were among the better non-SNES games. |
I could not possibly disagree with your sentiments about classic Genesis games more strongly. The Genesis is my favorite system other than the PC because its games are fantastic. I owned an NES and an SNES when they were in production and I enjoyed the Genesis the most. Also, I never met anybody who played Prince of Persia because of any perceived counter-culture significance. I had a friend who loved PoP because it was both challenging and somewhat unique. You really should be more careful with those baseless generalizations, they do you a disservice.
@OP: Personally, I hate the original PoP. The controls, trial and error gameplay design and time limit are more than enough to discourage me from playing it.
