Forums - Nintendo - Rumor: Wii U price set at $350 by Walmart

Nsanity said:

"Nintendo is expected to unveil the final Wii U specs, launch lineup, and price at E3 in about 5 weeks."

Except...Nintendo isn't announcing specs OR price at E3.  So that's just completely false.  Nintendo hasn't released specs for their last three hardware systems...and they JUST said last week that there will be no talk about price at E3.

People are missing the point here.

Wal-Mart has to set a preorder price, and it is against their policy to make preorderers pay more than they originally intended if the price rises. Let us say they advertised the Wii U as $250, and people then preordered it. If Nintendo then announced a $300 price, Wal-Mart would still be forced to honour the $250 price for those who preordered.

They WILL, however, drop the price for preorderers if the product ends up cheaper than their list price. By setting an initial price at $350, then if the U turns out to be $300, they can simply lower the price and everybody is happy, while having it the other way around would make Wal-Mart lose money.

Long story short, this isnt a confirmation in the slightest.

^ exactly what i was thinking. Just to be on the "safe side" of things.

This a little bit more than what I was expecting.

I agree that Walmart will probably have some crazy bundles for the WiiU. They often had cheapest Wii you could buy off of their website in a bundle with games/controllers totaling more than $500 for the first few years.

I came in here to say this. Probably Wal-Mart asked for the price and Nintendo said "no higher than $350" so Wal-Mart put that price down. It could still mean a $300 price point in the end.

Well, at least we know that the console will be, at worst, 350$, possibly less.

I feel the need to step in and remind people that there is no actual evidence of these adverts. As is often the case a user simply sent a screenshot to a gaming site.

Do people not remember the whole play.com vita game fiasco? It is insanely easy to fake something like this. It could also be true and someone did just take a screenshot.

However people need to stop acting as though Walmart as even started taking pre-orders at this price. They haven't. This is the problem with game journalism sites. Instead of reporting this as a rumour they have immediately jumped to the conclusion that Walmart did run these ads. Even though we only have one easily faked screenshot so far.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

Exactly.  If anything, this is just a confirmation that $350 is the absolute maximum price the system could possibly be.

On a personal note, I think that $350 would be the price to launch at if they want to make a tidy profit while selling very few units.  $300 will probably be the best compromise between their profit per unit and a reasonable amount of sales.  If they wanted to go cut-throat and really get this thing into people's houses, they'd launch at $250, but I don't see that one happening.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

$350 seems more than reasonable to me. You can't even buy a decent tablet with a 6 inch screen for under $200 at a bare minimum, so an extra $150 for everything else would be fine.
