Forums - Gaming - Honestly, why is Killzone 2 so highly hyped?

Killzone 2 better end up being better (if not MUCH better) than Resistance 2. The game is Sony's flagship title. They have given GG 3 years and over $40 mil. to work on this game, and dedicated an entire E3 press event to it's official gameplay unveiling. With all that effort, if they are trumped by Insomniac who puts out a game every freakin' year (praise to them for it, their games always kick ass), I think Sony will be kinda pissed. They'll be thinking, why didn't we just throw tons of cash at Insomniac instead? They managed to make the better game without an assload of support.

Believe it or not, R&C commercials are STILL running every now and then.

The only thing killzone 2 has going for it consist of graphics and hype. And more hype revolving around graphics. From what little I've heard of Resistance 2 in like the 48 hours its been revealed, it sounds like it's going to be a MUCH better game than Killzone 2.

Every now and then? I see them all the time, same with uncharted and the regular PS3 adds. PS3's really stepped up it's marketing budget. I see more of any one of those commercials than I see Wii or 360 commercials.

But yeah. It's hyped so much because it's rumored to cost anywhere between 2 and 3 times the price of your average blockbuster triple A budget.

Throw in advertising, and it's obvious Sony doesn't want to make money they want to turn Killzone into it's Halo or Mario.

I couldn't even imagine how much they'd have to sell to make back their money.

Sony obviously saw something in GG, and with all the contacts they now have being first party, and their major budget, I think they have a pretty good shot at delivering with KZ2.   There has to be some reason Sony is risking so much with GG, when they have Insomniac and Resistance sitting right next to 'em.

if the first killzone can sell 1 million and be a "bad" game as many say then why dont you think killzone 2 can as many reviewers said it played well and looked great plus R&C dont really apeal to the PS3 audience (Hardcore) and uncharted should break 1 Million aswell as Heavenly Sword

Heavenly Sword had a budget of $20 million... I don't know what the net profit on ps3 games is but it seems like they would have to sell at least a million to break even and various publishes have given this figure for big-budget ps3 games. Stagnant sales of this game indicate, to me, that it will never reach 1 million unless Sony decides to pack it in with its console.

From varying accounts, the budget for Killzone 2 is more (twice according to one) than HS. A low install base -- and the fact that only four games have topped 1 million worldwide leads me to believe that this game will result in massive losses for Sony.

It was reported in November of 2006 that Killzone 2's budget had surpassed at least 16 mil. Euros (21 mil. USD). That number has only grown in the year since, and will continue to grow until the game hits the market.

From GameSpot:

While Black Book cost more than 16 million euros (approximately $21 million), Guerilla won't mention specific numbers for Killzone's budget. "Our budget tops [the film]," said Killzone director Arjan Brussee. "We're working on the biggest multimedia project in Dutch history."

This game is hyped because people were so prompt to call out a lie and expose the deception back in 2005 though anybody with a spark of intelligence knew that the video shown could not be real in-game footage (Hell, the PS3 was still a prototype at that time).

At E3 last year the same people were snikering while waiting for the real in game footage to fail miserably in comparison with the 2005 trailer. But the result was quite as good. This is were the hype for this game comes from, not from delusional Sony fanboys but from the undeserved negative press the game received back in 2005.

just let people have their fun and have hope. whats so bad about a bit of anticipation? no one knows right now how it willo turn out. looks quite pretty though.

To people quoting third party publishers on sales, they have to sell more to break even, in house games made by Sony don't need to sell as much to break even due to the publishers cost going right back to Sony.

Kz2 looks good, and it actually looks like it will be a lot of fun. I'll wait till it comes out though to determine if it lives up to the hype.

I had killzone 1 on ps2, then i took it back the day after, i mean it was good in apsects of a shooting game, graphics and physics, but i think the game was repeditive, and predictable, thats just me tho.

I have no idea either. I think it's because of the prerendered trailer they first showed, where they lied to people and said it was ingame. First one was absolute crap, so why this would suddenly be great, I have no idea.

I'm not saying it is going to be a bad game nor do I want it to be because I am a big fan of the PS3, but why hyped so much after Killzone(PS2) and Killzone Liberation(PSP) just got average reviews reviews, nothing really special.

Did I miss something or some announcment to give the game so much hype or what?

After an extremely disappointing 2007, PS3 fans are pinning their hopes on anything they think will sell the system. Also, some people believe the Killzone series will be to Sony what the Halo series has been for Microsoft. I don't think it will sell terribly well.. probably on par with the PS3 Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted. Ok, but not enough to earn back the cost of production and promotion.

Your kidding right? Uncharted has more than payed for it's budget and will close over a million by the end of March.

Ratchet will break even too.

You obviously have no idea what games like that costs to make. They need to sell millions, to make a profit.
