Microsoft's Kinect is well known around the gaming industry. It sold quite well and Microsoft is expanding the Kinect's reach far from gaming. But, there seems to be a lot of hate for the Kinect. I too am part of it, but despite our displeasure with the Kinect, it is still selling. So now I have a question to ask you. Do you think the Kinect was a success gaming-wise?

Commercially and saleswise, there is no denying it. In terms of impact, actual usefullness and gaming relevance, its a flop in my books. It ended up precisely like many said it would; a casual mechanic thrown into the mix to try to steal customers from the Wii.

It was a financial success, but most of the games are horrible.

Financially? Yes.
Critically? I dislike motion control gaming, so I can't comment.

Not critically, no.
It's given us a pretty fun dance game, that's about it. It's got a ton of potential, but for something billed as the future of gaming I'm pleased to say it flopped hard.

(I got so riled up with all these PR idiots talking about gamepads as if they were dead and that flailing my arms around in rail shooters and minigames was the future of this amazing entertainment medium.)

Dance Central and KS are good... The rest sucks

I am happy with it as an interface. I dont play many games with it by myself but when a group of people are over it is fun. (kind of like my wii). The voice controls for watching movies and the navigating the menus works great too. No need for my controller except to turn off the xbox which kind of sucks.

I had great fun with Kinect (mind you, I think 360 is most unappealing to me of the 3, not that one of them is very appealing), so yes, it was a success.

But as Rol said, it's pretty much for two kind of games, dancing and sports. I recently played Joyride, and while it's fun for 10 minutes, it's gameplay hell.

I had a lot of fun the few times that I used the Kinect. But just like with the Wii mote, I did not like using it for every game. My copy of The Conduit is still sitting in some dusty box because I do not like FPS motion games. The Kinect is the same thing. I do not want to play anything other than sports and dancing games with it.
As for the Wii, Skyward Sword was the only non party game that I used the wiimote for. Other than maybe...Excitebots.
Would Star Wars Kinect have sold more if it was just Star Wars?

I thought that fps with the wii wasn't too bad. I actualy prefered it. Did you mess with the controls at all to make it more your style as you can adjust how fast you turn and what part of the screen will make you turn?

There are some good examples of great games on it, Dance Central and Happy Action Fun Theater. But the device needs more games to cater to the devise and it's limitations. It is an awesome piece of tech that developers have not used enough. Motion control, like touch control, has it's place in gaming. But it just takes willingness of developers to do trial and error to make it work. Microsoft really needs to incentivise the indie gaming community to explore and innovate on the device.
