MS didn't over stuff retail channels. Retailer's did that, not MS. Most likely retailers and distributors banked on the 360 and kinect selling like it did when it launched way back in 2010. MS was only too happy to oblige to their orders.

This. Companies can't simply force retailers to take in and pay for a shit load of consoles because they shipped them. A retialer has to order something before they recieve it.

there are actually some instances wherein companies can force retailers to buy a shit load of stuff and way more than what they need. this usually can happen when the company owns the the leading product and has an overwhelming control of the market plus the product is greatly greatly in demand.

I've seen this happen once when I use to work at retail. good thing that i wasn't the purchaser in charge of that product lol!

It's also exceedingly easy when you control the retail arm. For example, Apple could easily channel stuff through their stores (though, given the sales of their product, they hardly ever do).

Unfortunately, car companies do this all the time, and then they can't shift them. This causes them to use such ridiculous finance packages that it ends up hurting the company real bad. GM did this massively before their bailout... and by the looks of their numbers, they're still doing it today.

The miniscule 1.4 million shipment of Xbox 360 in Q1 of 2012 proves VGC numbers are right. MS overstuffed the retail last year.

Nope. MS shipped the correct amount of consoles in 2011, they didn't in the same quarter of 2010.

Here is their shipment data, launch to present

05/06 - 1.5 m 1.7m 1.8m
06/07 1.0m 4.4m 0.5m 0.7m
07/08 1.8m 4.3m 1.3m 1.3m
08/09 2.2m 6.0m 1.7m 1.2m
09/10 2.1m 5.2m 1.5m 1.5m
10/11 2.8m 6.3m 2.7m 1.7m
11/12 2.3m 8.2m 1.4m data pending
Average 2.03m 5.12m 1.54m 1.36m

Guess what the average for their Q1 is (the bold)...1.54 million. Last quarter MS shipped 1.4 million, slightly under the average. When they "only" shipped 6.3 million in Q4 2010, they had shortages into the new year, hence why they shipped an extra million or so in Q1 2011.

If they had really overstuffed the channels then the shipments would have been closer to 2007 Q1 figure of 500K. The real info to glean from this is that MS will probably ship around another 8 million in Q4 this year and much more if they drop the price.

Seems like X360 is ~500k undertracked... maybe next week we can see adjustments.

Vgchartz numbers are never correct.

Great fact check. I honestly thought 1.4 million was an odd and low shipment number but now that I see the past numbers I remember that ~1.5 mill for Q1 is normal for the X360.
