Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai is going to do something different with the next entry in the series.

Speaking to IGN via email, Sakurai noted that he can’t rely on just adding new content for the next Smash Bros. release.

“There is a certain dead end we come to if we just expand the volume of the game,” he said.

“I intend to change direction a little as we go.”

This new direction has something to do with the twin platform release.

“The key to that’s going to be its dual support for 3DS/Wii U,” Sakurai said, but didn’t give further details.

“I’m really just getting started on this so it’s going to take time, but I’ll come up with something that uses that link as the game’s central axis, so I hope you’re looking forward to it.”

We’ve heard very little about the new game’s development so far; Sakurai’s comments suggest we won’t get an E3 2012 reveal.

I'm attracted into a SSB game on my 3DS on the go.
I'm attracted into a HD SSB game on Wii U.
Sadly I am not attracted into the idea of the 2 of them being connected. I rly have a feeling that it will be a gimmick that they will focus on way to much and it will feel like its shoved down our throat at the end.

Off course I hope I'm wrong. I have no idea what they are planning so maybe they have something great up their sleeves. But great or not, I'm not to hot into the idea of having to buy 2 games on the next SSB launch day, will hurt my wallet.

I only wanna buy one version even though I'll have both consoles, they should make it so you don't need both games!

Other than content sharing, I really don't see too many possibilities here :S And if Sakurai's statement is legitimate, then it appears that he hasn't come up with any significant ideas either!

Cross platform online battles or simultaneous local gameplay (maybe for more than 4 players) would be great. I don't know which platform I'd buy the game on first, though. Most people think Smash Bros. is too complicated so we hardly ever play it in local multiplayer (compared to other games that is) and the loading times always put me off when I think of playing it solo. So probably 3DS. Definitely looking forward to the game.

I see one big thing that can come from this. And that is 8+ player battles.

Plz Nintendo, steal my idea.

This sounds terrible. Doing this one a series that only comes out 1 time per console generation, you really don't have a lot of room to do experimental shit, and if it turns out people have to buy both systems just to do something, then that would suck for a lot of people.

i am still disappointed they didn't make smash bros for the ds. with 140+ million users that just sounds like money in the bank for nintendo
