The point is they don't understand the gaming community, ie; The community who actually is interested in these games, and watches the show, wants to be able to watch e3 and be surprised.
The error is that generally, leaks should be reserved for mid-range games, as in, "they leaked all this regular content, but then blew us away with X, Y, and Z".
But what happens is that Sony tends to leak everything except one thing, that's like 3-4 years away from release (see last guardian), shows us everything we already saw a month before, shows us some multiplats with meh exclusive content, and I always just end up feeling bleh.
Sony usually wins simply because the other two fail at e3, imo. If Sony were just to hold their cards a little closer to their chest and surprise people, there would be much more buzz and stuff to talk about. In fact, even if they further held something back and then held a conference like 5 days later with a megaton announcement....if they really care about the amount of content in a short amount of time....leave it for AFTER, don't announce it before...or at least, learn how to leak properly. Show resumes of a developer saying "worked on unrevealed AAA ps3 game slated for XX/XX".
Leak a bandwidth usage cap of a developer being way higher than normal...something like that. Don't just give the names away..
