It baffles me that people can't grasp a simple truth about gaming: graphics are there to present the rest of the game; that's all there is to it. Graphics help tell the story or give the game charm, they should not be the focus of the experience, but merely a pleasant cherry on top of an already good game; doubly so when it comes to Mario. We already know the story, we already understand the gameplay, there's absolutely no reason in the world to complain about perfectly charming graphics just because the game isn't utilizing the full power of the system it's on. That doesn't mean you can get away with the bare minimum, but a game like mario has always been about solid platforming and level design, no mario game (with the plausible exception of super Mario RPG) has ever been about stretching the boundaries of its respective hardware.

Frankly, if I'm going to complain about anything regarding New Super Mario Brothers 2, it's going to be about what I expect to be a shortage on levels. given the inevitably huge sales this game will get, it wouldn't kill them to take the time to add more levels, it'll still make a monstrous profit.

Graphics whores bother me.

I think happyD's main concern is about the actual art style. If you've played the three original games on the NES; noticed how the graphics evolved? That's what all this is about. Those three games are on the same system - NSMB2 is for a TOTALLY new system, and therefore the visuals should change, and not for the worse....

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

It looks fine.

How do you think they could improve it anyways? More polygons/higher resolution textures aren't going to make it look that much better imo

Just a different art style - kinda how SMB3 looked different to SMB (and SMB2 even more so)

Yes. It needs more polygons and textures. I want mario to looks so real that I can see the sweat rippling off of his double chin.

This is not the first series though where Nintendo has gotten a pass for providing a graphical minimum.

Games like Battalion Wars were good because the graphics were actually pretty good despite the charming visuals. However,  some games like Fire Emblem (Path of Raidance & Radiant Dawn) & Animal Crossing Wii had slapdash efforts in the 3D visuals department.

I think the biggest problem from these screenshots are the jagged edges. In 2012...should we really have those? I'm chalking it up to the fact that they are screenshots as opposed to video.

Despite all that, I'm still in the camp that assumes it will be awesome regardless but be aware - Nintendo has been releasing A LOT of Mario lately. An NSMB I dont mind due to the massive hardware sales it will bring but still....they are plataeu-ing and getting a little stagnant. In the end, their software rush for the 3DS this year is a positive sign; Wii U development is now the primary focus. 2013 I expect way fewer 1st party games for the handheld, but Nintendo has already secured major 3rd party efforts in the interim.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

Here you go:

The graphics don't bother me, but I would have preferred a New Super Mario Bros. 2 that is like the US SMB 2 just so it's not the same as the last one.

Also, just to remind the community:

^AND THAT'S A FUCKING HD-CONSOLE

I'm not sure if changing the art style is the right direction. NSMB has a certain artstyle, like Mario Galaxy has a certain art style. If they use a different art style it wouldn't be NSMB anymore it would be Super New Super Maro Bros! ;)
