Suppose Disney makes a new Mickey Mouse movie to appeal to a new fanbase. Mickey's clothes are rendered in beautiful CGI and so detailed, you could see the stitching in the fabric. 2D Mario isn't about pushing a console to its limits. 2D Mario is about taking the game back to what made people fall in love with the 8-Bit games of their childhood. Simple graphics, fun gameplay, cheerful music, and familiar themes. 2D Mario is video game comfort food and we love it. We don't want it to change. I'm gonna love it, my kid is going to love it, and maybe even her kid will love it. Hell, my non-gaming cousins that played Mario when they were kids will probably enjoy it. Meanwhile the graphical beasts of today will WISH they had the longevity of a 2D Mario game.

I don't know about you, but it's been 3 years since NSMB Wii came out and 6 years since NSMB DS. I need some 2D Mario goodness.

True, but I also see graphical improvements between NSMB and NSMB2. They may be small, but with your Pokemon argument small improvements can be good. Plus none of us have seen how this game looks in 3D. It could look great, or very bad. I have no clue.

Good point, BUT, the clincher is this.

Pokemon B/W2 looks to have much more depth than B/W (which is kinda the point of a sequel in general). That depth is translated in more characters, more environments, more details on previous environments.

In a similar way, compare Majora's Mask to OoT. You'll immediately see what I mean.

Now back to NSMB2. I don't see it happening. c.f spiders.
