Difference is that PS was unknown, Nintendo were dominating in Japan at the time and everyone was waiting for a N64 with Final Fantasy 64, Dragon Quest VII, Mario 64 and so on. Nintendo kept delaying it, Square and Enix switched to PS and the rest was history.

This time round, PS3 is coming off the back of PS2, the biggest and fastest selling home console in Japan's history, with a strong brand name and all the same franchises that made PS2 so popular, so you would have expected PS3 sales to resemble PS2 rather than PS

What I hadn't fully appreciated until I saw these figures is that PS3 is tracking significantly behind not only PSP but also Gamecube and even Saturn. It is only beating out Dreamcast be a couple of hundred thousand and this is with a price drop.

So unlike PS where FF VII was unexpected and propelled Sony into gaming stardom, with PS3 it is more a case of needing some big games and quickly if they want to avoid ending up around 5-6m.
5-6 million would be very good for a losing console in Japan ioi.  No losing console has sold more than 5.7 million in Japan.  PS3 isn't going to sell more than that if they can only get core gamers.

Remeber ioi, while PSP is selling hardware its not selling software anywhere near the same level, its more because of its media capabilities than gaming, will PS3 fall to the same fate?

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

since when has there been much competition for handhelds in japan before now? Also you say the market is expanding but the sales don't really reflect an increase over last generation. Wii is selling similar numbers to PS2, PS3 is selling similar numbers to GC. I agree that the market is changing, but I don't see any evidence that it's getting bigger unless you are speaking of DS. Software sales for core games are only a fraction of what they the last few gens.

Wait, the GB sold 4000 15 years after its release. That is in 2004 so people bought Game Boys in stores when the DS was out. Impressive.

Predictions for December 31st 2008:
Wii 38,000,000
DS 84,500,000
PS3 17,000,000
PSP 41,000,000
X360 23,000,000

Regarding PS3s, Japanese people seem to be buying them as Blu-Ray players more than other regions in the world, so PS3 hardware could take off as the PSP did due to its multimedia capabilities. Software sales could be really low like the PSP's too, though, so Sony really has to find a way for that not to happen.

I see the Wii selling above PS2's trend for some time from now, due to Wii Fit having more casual appeal than anything the PS2 ever had. This year, Wii sales could well peak in Japan due to this, and the peak could be very very high.

NJ5, the 3rd year is the normal time for a peak anyway.

True, I just think that Wii's peak in Japan is going to surprise many people by its dimension, especially due to Wii Fit which seems like a trend-shifter.

Yeah I don't see Wii peaking in 2008 because of the fact that they have yet to release a new color or a price drop and with Wii fit around, i doubt they will either in 2008
