the 360 failed at its attempt to take the japanese market and Sony failed at its attempt to take the NA market PS3 launched at a ridiculously high price within a recession here and really did not deliver on its online portion which was obviously like the main focus in American gaming in order for the XBOX to do good in Japan they would need to get the top games that Japanese people play. Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest would be the only way to take the Japanese market. It would be hard because those games are already big on PS consoles over there so the best thing they could do is get a deal to launch 6-12 months earlier than the competition OR get timed dlc so every body would buy the game on there console(which was pretty much what they did with a lot of games to make sure people bought it on their console). of course it didnt happen because Sony caught on to that strategy that Microsoft was doing and made a deal with Square to have FF13 release a year earlier in that region on their console. Square also took forever to finish the game so MS couldn't make any deals with them earlier in the gen with FF |
Whut? Online gaming wasn't very mainstream until years after 360 launched. PS3 contributed to that in a major way since it was free to play online.
Yes Halo was a popular series on original Xbox but that's pretty much it. Nothing else was really popular online at the time. Gears of War didn't launch until November 2006 and COD4 until Nov. 2007.
