HappySqurriel said: While I'm sure there are a ton of Sony fans that will get defensive for saying this, with how many studios Sony has that produce games few people buy, Sony could eliminate between 1/3 and 1/2 of their developers and almost no one would notice. I don't think this would be a good approach, but I would suggest that Sony should probably look at consolidating as many of these studios as they can to try to concentrate talent and (hopefully) start producing games people care about. |
This, they should just focus on their best performers, guerilla, ND, MM etc and then they can support them with better resources and market fewer games for higher sales. 20 games selling 1.5 million (30 million) vs 8 games selling 5 million each (40 million). with the latter costing a lot less.

It would be a bold move, but one i doubt Sony management would make.

Yeah. I will probably have to put on my flame suit here, but Sony should close their 1st party developers that just don't make profits. Team Ico would be a prime example. Ico and shadow of the colossus didn't exactly set the sales records on fire, and The last guardian has been in pre production since at least Jan 2008, a minimum of 4 years and 3 months, and judging by the leaked may 2009 gameplay trailer, at least some kind of higher production since may 2009, almost 3 years. And it still doesn't have a release date!

It doesn't strictly have to be based on profit ...
To pick numbers (more or less) at random, if Sony focused their attention on the top 10 most profitable games and the top 10 most critically acclaimed games of the year they would end up with 12 to 15 games being released every year that really added value to their platform; but Sony's push to have the most studios has resulted in a lot of developers who produce low quality unprofitable games that (really) doesn't help any of Sony's platforms.

Well, seeing as a priority of Sony is now to turn a profit, as evidenced by huge job cuts to reduce costs, I feel it is mostly about profit. I see what you mean, where value added is also important, but games can be critically acclaimed and also be relatively quick to make; think of uncharted 1,2,3. They were in pre and post production for roughly 2 years and still sold well with great ratings. Team icos new game isn't even on schedule for 4 years, and let's be frank, I bet it will sell a lot less than uncharted. I'm just saying some games studios that have huge production times need to be closed or at least curtailed.
