With that said, comparisons between SEGA and THQ are hilarious at best. SEGA merged with Sammy and had a restructure already. The company has been showing profits, and the news show the company will still have profits, just half of what it predicted.

Yeah, but it seems like Sammy has been carrying the load thanks to their pachislot business for a long time now. It seems like they've finally had it with Sega and are putting them on a tight leash. Word on Twitter is that Sega of America itself has been canceled (along with any hopes of Shenmue III ever ever).

Sucks to see Sega dying all over again, because Binary Domain is my GOTY so far.

Indeed, if you need a revenue stream to support a money sink, pachinko parlors are one of the best things you can have. Those places are everywhere and always packed, even during midday on the weekdays, somehow...

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Maybe we'll get Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Shenmue III after all. As pachislot machines. Everyone wins!

Sega is practically irrelevant in gaming. People associate Sega with Sonic and a bunch of old and dead game series.

Nowadays most of Sega's games are made by third party developers who almost accidentally got their games published by Sega. The consumers don't associate Total War, Bayonetta, Valkyrie Chronicles or Condemned with Sega, they associate them with their respective developer, if anything. No developer actively seeks to get their game published by Sega

Could you provide evidence for this? They're strong words, and I have seen anything to indicate that in the press.

I remember, back in the day on Usenet (Google groups now) on the videogame forums, people were trumpeting how awesome it would be for Sega to go third-party so everyone could get ahold of their titles.  In short, them not having their own console would end up allowing them to branch out.

Pretty much the reality is what I though.  Without their own console, they really don't have a way to differentiate themselves in the market at all.  They are now less relevant than the likes of Capcom and Konami, although they do have a mascot.  And Sonic exists because they had their own console.  Withont the Genesis/Megadrive, Sonic wouldn't of even came close to challenging Mario at all, and would of got some attention, but not nearly the level Sonic has been at.  Considering how much Sonic franchise has gone downhill, Sonic would of been long buried without its own console.

I don't think Sega is still struggling with the loss of hardware. Sega is struggling to produce high end software. Sega did change when they lost hardware but the company has restructured.

I am pretty confident this announcement is a preemptive move. Sega sees the next generation costs are going to be double to triple and Sega realized they simply cannot produce all the games they do now. Fact is Sega cannot afford to take risks if they are going to make the jump to the next generation.

As for the whole relying on high end strong IP. THQ is establishing new high end IP to survive off of. This is not bad they are creating new properties focusing on high quality.

Fact is Dev costs are simply going to be too high for developers to release software that isn't a sure thing. That means big budget high quality software and/or established software.

I really hope Sega and other publishers release quality software for WiiU to offset costs of next generation Sony and Microsoft hardware.

The problem with companies like SEGA or THQ, is that you can't "shrink" your way to profitability.  That's not a viable business strategy.  You have to make large investments in order to see long-term profits.  Their problem is brand awareness.  No one knows what SEGA does outside of Sonic, and Sonic isn't the IP stronghold it once was.  It's faded heavily in relevance over the last few generations of consoles.  SEGA left the hardware market because they felt their strength was in software, because making hardware wasn't profitable enough.  But that hasn't worked out at all.  SEGA has been shedding jobs and money incrementally ever since it cancelled the Dreamcast.  Their whole strategy represents a failure to grow and maintain a strong brand and image.  Nintendo has done an incredible job in those two areas.  SEGA must just be run by a bunch of hacks.

Sega didn't have the pockets to compete in the hardware arena, so they left.  It was a matter of survival for them.  They had their roots in the arcades, so hardware was their area.  However, with arcades not being what they were, they had to move.  They lost to Sony.  Things move on.

Didn't Sega try and reboot Golden Axe with a solo play for the female character x yrs back? Golden Axe Beast Rider...But, I heard the game was an absolute joke and a horrible gaming experience...So I passed on it.

No evidence. Truth be told it's just speculation based on my own impression that games published by Sega have poor sales.
