Forums - General - Mega Millions lottery

Anyone playing? (U.S., of course)  The jackpot is supposedly up to $500 mil.  I put in $20 about 8 years ago in an office co-op.  That was the only time I played the lottery.  I'm purchasing $20 in tickets just for the hell of it.

Jackpot is too high to not play. $350 million cash option is insane.

I never play... however, when it so damn high its pretty much impossible to not play.

I played $3 when it was 360m... I'll play a few bucks for this 500m too. Crazy to think you could win a half a billion dollars.

$500 million? o.o

Wow that's a lot. National Lottery in the UK is usually about £2-3 million, and rollovers can sometimes accumulate up to about £8-15 million.
I think the Euro-millions ranges between £10 million and £50 million, but you Americans always seem to do things bigger.

Personally I don't bother with the lottery in general, and I would be surprised if many people on this website (which is full of statistics and predictions and such) are regular entrants, because we should understand the ridiculous odds.
(In the UK lottery there are 49 numbers to choose from, and you get to pick 6 numbers (plus a bonus number) to win the jackpot you have to match all 6 which is a 1 in 14 million chance for an average win of under £2 million)

I don't frown on the occasional buying of a ticket for a bit of fun, but try to discourage people doing it every week... going back into statistics for the UK lotto, if you enter just once a week for a year then you are still not at a 1:1 likelihood of claiming a prize (and if you do claim a prize it is over 95% likely to be just £10)

I was concidering on playing. Even with just a dollar, it couldn't hurt to win millions.

I always end up just letting the computer pick my numbers though. I should do 5 of my own numbers and 5 of the computers. Anyone ever get those scratch tickets that have numbers that conveniently just go around your numbers? What is the deal with that?

I don't think it really matters. If you look down the list of winners in any lotto a great number of them you can easily tell are definite auto generated picks. Especially when work groups win.
