considering the ps2 is approaching 12 years on the market and still going I think it's no doubt the ps3 will pass wii life time

what do PS2 sales have to do with PS3 sales?

they arent correlated in any way.

if Sony supported the ps2 for 12 years there's nothing to say they can't do the same with the ps3

...and how does that answer my question?  PS2 sales and PS3 sales are not correlated.

PS2 sales after 12 years are 1500 per week in japan... mostly replacement purchases.  PS3 wont have the same install base for replacement purchases so what do you expect PS3 weekly sales to be in 2018?

Who says they're replacement purchases? If history repeats itself, the PS3 will sell long after PS4 comes out, even PSP is selling after Vita's launch. Thats whats always been with Sony consoles.

common sense does...

Sure friend

come on then... give me the sales for the next 5 years, individual years PS3 numbers for japan.

2012: 1.6 million

2013: 1.4 million

2014: 1.2 million

2015: 800k

2016: 400k

2017: 200k

2018: below 100k

Pessimistic numbers, it can do 15 million by 2018. PS3 is still very expensive in Japan. PS3 is already doing better then last year, it will do even better with a pricecut.

How'd I know this wouldn't be a controversial-less topic! Don't change VGC!

OT: Good to see the system still tickin', but I hope the PS3 is a valuable lesson to Sony.

I hope too but Vita shows...

If this gen has taught us anything, it should be that history often does not repeat itself. The PS3 is not the PS2. No console this gen is the PS2, or even close to it.

shouldn't it be 1.8 million if your predict it to be around a healthy 9.5 million in your OP?

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

anybody else cant check ps2 numbers on vgc?

i think it passing the Wii really all depends on when the next PS releases the later the better chances, but if i were to place a bet or have to answer it as a question on a test i would say that it will end up doing it

So PS3 is only at 8m; am I the only one who doesn't think it is that high considering the 3DS hit 5m not too long ago?

DS sold 33m in Japan... no home console ever sold that... Wii sold 12.35m to date.

8 mil? 60+ mil WW, man Japan has changed so much since PS2....XD

PS3: 60m WW -> 8m Japan (13%)
PS2: 150m WW -> 23m Japan (15%)

I think it's the same yet... PS2 is more popular than PS3 in Japan and Worldwide.

Oh wow, well the % wise is the same, guess Japan's market is way too small XD

What is the US % for both systems if you dont mind I ask?

PS2: 53.65 (35%)
PS3: 22.39 (36%)

The PS3 is selling proportionally the same (by region) the PS2 sold but the in numbers/popularity the PS2 is way strong than PS3.
