Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Metro as a touch interface at all. I think it's a great tablet interface. I simply don't like it for standard desktop work and after seeing it in action, it's pretty easy to see why Apple has kept OS X and iOS at arm's length from one another. Right now, the two interfaces don't play well together, though I think Apple is on to something with their Magic Mouse/trackpad gestures for the desktop. Once you get used to using the surface of a mouse as a second input level for gesturing, you feel really slighted and out of sorts when you're using a traditional mouse.

Which is actually kind of the same feeling I get when I'm on W7 now. I have this constant itch to press my Windows-key and do something with the start screen, but W7 lets me down every time.

It's also the same reason I'm really looking forward to having a touch screen laptop with Windows 8. My personal dream device would be something like this where I can just plug in a mouse if I need to use something that isn't designed for touch, but otherwise just doing the gesture dance.

Amazing how complicated and technical the replies got to my original simple question!

I'm still no closer to deciding, although the Blackberry playbook seems like a great deal and I don't need many apps really...does anyone know if I can stream movies from my network on it?

Buy a Kindle Fire TODAY. Seriously. If you don't like it, you'll be able to sell it for more than the $139 you paid. I'm sure they're going to run out quickly at that price.

It's not available in the UK yet

Dont have a tablet, but i heard some good stuff about the Kindle Fire!

edit: Oh just read your post that it isnt available in your local.. damn that sucks of course.

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

Talk about a ridiculous deal... Amazon is offering refurbished Kindle Fires for $139. Even though I own an iPad, I'm tempted to snatch this sucker up (though I won't, just spend several hundred dollars on a new professional-grade inkjet printer and still have to buy paper and a CISS system for the thing).

Yeah, I was considering this. I'd even let my 9yr old pretty much keep it at that price.

I'm waiting for the Lenovo Yoga or something like it. Having a laptop AND a tablet is stupid.

i just needed something for its browser and had flash, so i chose the playbook it was only $199, and i dont regret it,
if your looking for apps than it is probably not a good choice.

They run different apps; most tablet based apps aren't at all suited for standard PC operating systems and hardware.

There's a lot more unnecessary crossover between netbooks and dedicated laptops, with tablets essentially killing the netbook market and ultra books more or less being fully functional laptop PCs with a lot of the always on/standby power management advantages of tablet PCs.

While I see no reason to carry both an MBP and an iPad, neither really replaces the other.

While I can't run any professional content production apps on the iPad, it is never as quick, or convenient as it is to look something up on an iPad on standby mode, nor is it possible to have such a laptop with enough power to run all day.

Tell that to those of us who need an i7-powered monster power-sucking laptop to do our jobs. Some of us need serious horsepower from our laptops but also want the portability of a tablet.

Not everyone has the same needs as you.

The lenovo yoga is all those things and a tablet; plus its super thin and light.

Microsoft has a pretty good history of getting developers on board (excepting Phone 7)

Explain how?

They have just under 80,000 apps for Windows phone in less than a year and a half.  Its' growing almost as fast as iOS app store did when it came out and much faster than Android app store did.

Not to mention their dev tools are class leading and support they provide developers is first rate. Here is a cool article about it -
