They run different apps; most tablet based apps aren't at all suited for standard PC operating systems and hardware.
There's a lot more unnecessary crossover between netbooks and dedicated laptops, with tablets essentially killing the netbook market and ultra books more or less being fully functional laptop PCs with a lot of the always on/standby power management advantages of tablet PCs.
While I see no reason to carry both an MBP and an iPad, neither really replaces the other.
While I can't run any professional content production apps on the iPad, it is never as quick, or convenient as it is to look something up on an iPad on standby mode, nor is it possible to have such a laptop with enough power to run all day.
