There is actually a good point in this comment somewhere.
I find that couples who have long-lasting relationships (i.e. married) tend to have a similar level of education and intellectual ability/interests. Maybe that's why I don't believe this, there would be such a gulf between these two that I can't see how their relationship would be sustainable if this was real.

Hmmm...I would say the logic is off simply by referring to marriage as a qualifier of a "long lasting relationship".
Other than that, there is a somewhat natural affinity for men and women to want to "take care of" seemingly weaker individuals. In many cultures, being dumb is seen as weak-in-a-cute-sort-of-way. The Japanese call it Kawaiso...and many people have maternal paternal instincts that make them want to care for and protect the weaker one.
