Yeah, for me it was pretty much what Rol said. 3rd parties screwed all my 2008ish prediction of final lifetime sales for Wii. I didn't think it would break 200m, but I thought 140-150 were really possible, i.e. matching or beating PS2.
But the combo of 3rd parties never coming and Nintendo themselves slowing down... it pretty much killed the Wii's strong momentum by late 2009.

no that wasn't it. it's not a thread. it's a post.

The funny part is; for the year end 2009 predictions, crazzyman undershot the Wii by a whole lot compared to others but actually ended up around 2 million closer than the average.
I also remember that GTAIV was going to kill the Wii, good times.
I actually have one prediction myself that seems to be correct that I'm very proud of; Mario Kart Wii will be the best selling Wii game of the generation (besides Sports, which is packed in with the controller).
There was a time when 160M was at Wii's reach with some effort (and 140M looked almost guaranteed). But 240M always was bonkers!
Who could have imagined it would have been Nintendo itself to kill Wii?
Another crazy bunch were malstromites and their prophecies of doom for Sony and MS.
| Mummelmann said: I remember JL's ridiculous predictions. He actually had quite a few followers. I was always one of those who spoke against him, and ours was also a fairly large group. Then there were those who were simply entertained by his posts and persona online. Come to think of it, he was entertaining and was actually a pretty good poster and I'm fairly certain he drew in some people to the boards to witness his antics. There's another one as well, the guy who calls himself Avinash. They both made some incredibly far fetched predictions and also both disappeared right around the time the Wii started going down yoy every week. A lot of users tried to take over the crown and pushed the same agenda onwards, "It will recover, wait for colors, price cut, game A, game B, massive 3rd party support" etc but no one had the same fervor as JL. In hindsight, seeing the arguments and predictions made for the Wii, one can clearly observe that all three main camps have been equally deluded and wrong this generation. One fell on it's ass, one simply broke and one spoke too soon. Let's just hope everyone learned something from the 7th generation. Also, let's hope JL returns to the forums. I actually mean that. |
Not many people's predictions could make Mike B's and Crazzzyman's look reasonable by comparison, but JL proved equal to the task.
that was a great thread back in the day. if i remember correctly not too many people actually bought into it (not even the biggest wii supporters of the time). there were quite a few, myself included, that at least pondered that prediction as not being completely unrealistic though. oh how wrong we were...
vgchartz was awesome back in the day! the site was so active and there would literally be a war every week the sales came out. generally most people did think the wii would cross 150m back then and also that the ps3 would struggle to cross 50m

Found him! ![]()
He stopped posting after his year end prediction for 2008 turned out to be more than 15 million over the actual units sold, which was the least accurate prediction out of all VGC contributors for that year.
60 m for year end 2008 was his prediction/guess if I remember correctly. Actual was just short of 43.7 m.
A lot of Nintendo pundits were making some really crazy predictions at the time though, getting caught up in the idea that they'd be more common in homes than DVD players, etc.. Some of the gems I remember included that 3rd party developers would be forced to make the Wii the lead development platform for their games or "go out of business" and that their shareholders would even demand this. 65% eventual marketshare was another gem.
Someone should dig up some of the other more ridiculous predictions to include some of the crazier PS3 related posts both predicting a 180 degree turnaround after (fill in your favorite PS3 exclusive here or $299 price) as well as those predicting the year in which SCE was to pull a Sega and drop out of the console business.
