Forums - Gaming - Jools Watsham gives reason why he thinks 3rd parties have trouble publishing on Nintendo systems.

“Publishing games on the 3DS is hard. I give up!” That’s basically what I am hearing from publishers these days. “Only first-party games are selling on the 3DS,” is what they tell me. Hm, I wonder why that would be. It wouldn’t have anything to do with the quality of the first-party games compared to the third-party games, would it? I doubt it would have anything to do with the marketing and PR efforts put into the games either. No, it must be the fact that first-party games use known brands and have the word Nintendo on them; nothing more. You can bet your bottom dollar that if these games were handled in the same manner as most third-party publishers handle their own games they’d be in the bargain bin in no time.

Well I can understand Western Publishers, since I can't even think a title I want by them.

The facts are that 3rd parties don't want to publish games on any Nintendo platform.......

He is probably talking about western support, which I dont really care honestly (handhelds)... As long the 3ds gets a lot of support from Japan it should be fine.

Capcom seems to be doing well on 3DS. Monster Hunter 3G sold over a million copies in Japan alone.

Ask me about being an elitist jerk

Time for hype

I have come to the conclusion that the main factors that drive success of games are the following:

  1. Quality (kind of obvious)
  2. Being part of a well known series (people who bought your previous game will likely buy the next game)
  3. Being developed by a well known studio (every day more people recognise the studios that created the games they loved)
  4. Having a large marketing budget
  5. Being in a popular genre

While there has been the occassional Nintendo game that has none of these (usually a very low budget game) the vast majority of the games Nintendo has seen success with have had 3 or more of these qualities going for it; and in many cases all 5. In contrast, the majority of third party games have none of these and the few games that people say "flopped" have 1 or 2 of these things going for them ...
