Forums - Sales - Alan Wake sales top 2 million, series 'has a future'

CVG

The original Alan Wake has topped two million sales across Xbox 360 and PC, developer Remedy has confirmed.

The studio's head of franchise development, Oskari Häkkinen told CVG in a recent interview that he feels the milestone means the action thriller has become a "cult classic" among gamers.

"We've moved over two million copies - that's including PC," he confirmed. "So after a slow start it's turning into something really positive. It's definitely had legs. I think narrative experiences just have a tendency for that.

"Alan Wake's like a cult classic if you like... People who have played and enjoyed the story feel the urge to tell their friends and other gamers out there that they need to try this experience, they need to play it."

Asked if he thinks the sales, coupled with the recent release of Alan Wake's American Nightmare, mean the franchise has a future, Häkkinen said:

"Yeah, I think so. Alan Wake is definitely very close to our hearts. It's our IP - we own it. It's not something that we're going to forget very easily.

"After Max Payne we could've literally gone, the whole team, and sat on a beach and sipped cocktails for quite some time. It's no secret that the Max Payne franchise was sold for $45 million. That put us in a really promising situation, but at the same time our hearts are in making video games and not in sipping cocktails on the beach."

Does Häkkinen hope the studio can top Max Payne's $45m price tag by flogging Alan Wake to a publisher? "That'd be fun, yeah, but Alan Wake is close to our hearts," he said.

Alan Wake released on PC last month, recouping its costs in just two days.

Right on. Loved the American Nightmare and hope we see more Alan Wake in the future...

Nice its sales i think are close to heavy rains then. I hope we get alan wake 2 next year.

Actually Alan Wake 360 sold over 2 million on its own given the bundle it had. Too bad it was downloadable and therefore VGchartz doesnt count it.

Dont know why it gets criticized for not selling well. Its sold on par to most ps3 exclusives save Uncharted and GT.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

These are not VGChartz numbers...

Not following. I know they arent the vgchartz numbers due to their policy to not count downloadable title sales. But a sale is a sale IMO.

Glad to hear it. It was on of my favorite games of 2010 I got American Nightmare, too. Hopefully, if they make another, they'll slow down the action a bit and give the atmosphere time to sink in. The first game was very scary when you didn't know what was going to happen. Really enjoyed it.

*holds up bowl*

I want s'more!

I'm guessing VGChartz stopped tracking the game, because if not that implies a rather large portion of sales are allocated to PC.

No, I mean, why did you mention VGChartz numbers if the article is reporting numbers from the devs themselves?

I think vgchartz has a duty to reflect the sales of a game as they sold according to all data available, including the word from the devs themselves.

What he's saying is that your 2m+ for 360 alone can't possible be correct unless the developers themselves don't count those sales.  And if the developers themselves aren't counting the sales why should VGC?

And god of war and Littlebigplanet and quite a few others. But your right. Those are decent sales and the game deserve its because it's pretty good and wasn't appreciated enough on Xbox. Haven't played american nightmare but I would like to.
