Nintendo Offering Crazy Incentives To Publish On Wii U eShop?

An anonymous developer has apparently informed Wii U Daily that Nintendo is offering publishers insane incentives for them to publish their content on the Wii U eShop. The European source claims that Nintendo is actively looking to offer all Wii U retail titles as downloadable titles via the Wii U eShop.

“They’re offering insane incentives for publishers to sell retail games as downloads on the console. You’d be stupid not to take advantage of it and go retail box-only”, he said, adding “The new platform is perfect for indie devs, it’s a whole different ball game than WiiWare. They’ve learned a lot from that mess”.

When we asked what the “insane incentives” on the Wii U eShop were, he replied: “It’s just a much bigger revenue cut that you’d get selling it on any other platform at the moment, plus promotions on the online store. If they [Nintendo] pull it off and it gains traction, it’ll press the other guys [Microsoft and Sony] to give more of the revenue to the publishers. It’s very good for us who make games.”

As I read it, he's saying that the game's graphics and graphical style was an influence. And I'm not sure what you mean by "beat", here, unless you mean that Retro were making their 2D platformer before the Mario team was making theirs... in which case, there's no evidence of this, there's only the fact that DKCR was visually appealing at the time that the Mario team was working on NSMB Wii.

That is exactly what he says:

“The Donkey Kong game that we just had out on Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns–I actually got a glimpse of a ROM while they were still in development. The graphics were so pretty that I thought, wow, that looks really nice. We were working on New Super Mario Bros. Wii at the time, and that really became an impetus. That really kicked us in the butts. I don’t know if “influence” is the right word, but it had an impact.”

They saw what Retro was doing and thought that "wow", so they had to work harder to make a better game.

As I said, it only proves that they were in development at the same time. It's possible, for instance, that the Mario team had been developing NSMB Wii since mid 2007, and that Retro started work on DKCR in early 2008. What he said was that seeing the DKCR looking the way it was looking gave them the motivation to make NSMB Wii better than it currently was, graphically... at least, that's what I'm reading. That event (of them seeing DKCR) could have been as late as early 2009.

I have the impression that our points of view are very close, yet we are still discussing it.

From the interview, I take the impression that while they were doing NSMBWii, they could see what Retro was doing with Donkey Kong and were impressed by its work (if he means the graphics or some gameplay ideas is an unknown). In fact, they were so impressed by Retro's work that they got more motivated to make an even better game. That's all.

That's why I said that somehow Retro beated them, albeit during development, because there was one point were Retro forced the 2D Mario team to work harder.

@ Nintendo with their new vision of online distribution

THAT is exactly the right way to get support from 3rd partie and small developers. This model resembles what Valve is doing with Steam, maybe they got their help (after all, there were rumors about Nintendo using Steam).

Well played, Nintendo... if true.

^I really do hope it's true!! As far as I'm concerned Nintendo will need all the help they can get keeping 3rd party support after 24 months when Durango/Orbis has been out for a while.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I think the more Nintendo can do to entice devs to their console, the better.
