Forums - General - LulzSec Leader Helps Bust The Hacking Group

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet.  I didn't see it, so apologies if it has.

'Infamous hacking group LulzSec has been allegedly turned in by its own leader.

According to Fox News, Hector Xavier Monsegur has been working for the government for months. Monsegur, who goes by the handle "Sabu" has been identified as an unemployed, 28-year-old father of two.

The Associated Press reports five members of the hacking group have been arrested and face charges in New York. The details of the charges are unclear at the moment. The law enforcement official spoke on condition of anonymity because the charges hadn't yet been officially announced.

The group also goes by the full name Lulz Security. Hackers associated with the group have claimed to be responsible for a variety of cyber attacks on large companies, law enforcement and government agencies.

The first court document to become available Tuesday was a criminal information against Hector Xavier Monsegur, charging the Manhattan resident with conspiracy to engage in computer hacking, among other charges. Authorities say he pleaded guilty to the charges on Aug. 15.

According to the court papers, he was an "influential member of three hacking organizations - Anonymous, Internet Feds and Lulz Security - that were responsible for multiple cyber attacks on the computer systems of various businesses and governments in the United States and throughout the world."'

I, for one, am glad to hear this news.  Hopefully this will deter someone from trying to hack other sites and gaming networks. So, how does the VGC community feel about this?  Are you guys relieved/happy or maybe upset by this turn of events?

All I have to say is: Lulz.

Thank the gods! I am so sick of these guys, and anonymous doing idiotic stuff to websites. I can see making a point about something and then changing it back. But it really got out of hand. I am sure it will continue to be out of hand as well.

It definitely got out of hand.  I remember when the PS3/Anonymous/Lulzsec thing went down, supporters were talking aobut the good Anon used to do.  It just seems as of late, maybe as new and younger members joined, their motivations became more selfish and they started going after people who "hurt" the hacking community, regardless of how small the infraction was.  That's how I saw it, anyway.

Maybe I'm crazy, but as of late, I'm more afraid of our government having power over the internet than these hacking groups.

I'm serious. (USA citizen).

You can lock away the criminals but you can't lock away the government.

I think all the hacking has a good side. It forces companies to actually put in some security measure instead of plain text login info.

Now that's a truly scary image.
