Forums - General - Tech enhancments in schools in the 2000's?

Hey all, im working on a project that requires me to research and list technological enhancements in schools in the 2000's.

I'm having more trouble than i envisioned when i first took it up - I figured some fellow VG Nerd/Geeks (represent) would have a few more ideas than i have, Any help i can get would be extremely appreciated.  Shank ya!

...uhh...ill just put my favorite quote of all time here.

"Welcome to Pain, the second of three...You have dealt the first...now deal with me!!"

To be honest, there was absolutely nothing different in our schools from the 90's into the 2000's. They had piece of crap macs the whole entire time in computer labs. They had piece of crap macbooks for classrooms when they were needed the whole entire time.

By piece of crap, I'm not saying macs are pieces of crap. I'm saying they had old piece of junk computers.

The internet was always slow as all holy hell, because their network would be completely maxed out, and they were too cheap to get it so it would work half decent.

I feel like I heard they got a whole ton of iPads after I left...but I'm not really sure that can even be called a tech enhancement. I don't in any way understand how an iPad "enhances" a classroom experience. Don't get me wrong, the things are cool...but all they will be used for by the students is yet another tool to dick around with and play games on.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

I've been running into the same thing. There are Smartboards but i cant find a date as to when they were introduced to schools. Only that they were invented in 1991.

Oh, I forgot about those! Yea, my school introduced them in the mid 2000's and they are awesome!

SMART Boards? We use those all the time in our classes. You could also talk about the new Security for School Computers. (Coming from a Middle Schooler.) Oh! There is also the PIV which students can use to check their grade online and see what they are missing, turned in, or need to be turned in by a certain date.

To be honest, I always felt personally being responsible for knowing when your homework is due was a good life lesson...I guess we will see in the near future if it really was that important, but my best guess is that we are going to have more and more people that forget to do things because they don't have an online program telling them that it is due (I'm talking once they get legitimate jobs that carry responsibility).

Come college, it really depends on your teacher, but you might not even be told you have a test upcoming. It is your responsibility to have been looking at the syllabus and know when things are due and when tests will be taken (I personally have always been told, but in other departments, I have heard people indicate otherwise)

Smartboards is a good start, you go into the detail about the advancement of graphing calculators from its humble beginnings to the Nspire series of today. Also i wouldn't consider the iPads an advancement(although you can look into ebooks), but the idea of the expansion of mobile technology in schools has definitely been an advancement.

Smartboards - interactive whiteboards that project the teachers computer onto a white board, you use a stylus on it, it's great. In all classrooms.

Fronter - My school uses this website, we can upload and see homework assignments and hand them in using this.

Wow, I thought my school was behind, obviously not.

Just like everyone, we just have projectors, interactive white boards and a computer system.

Turn it in.com - Website teachers have their students upload their papers to so it checks for plagiarism.
