Forums - Nintendo - N64 & Cube are abominations

I disagree that the N64 was an abomination. It had someamazing games. I even liked quite a few 3rd party ones too. (Top gear rally, Rush 2 etc.)

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

If the N64 was an abomination, then I must be one of Satan's spawn as much as I've enjoyed playing the games on that thing.

The reason that it failed was because it used an outdated format (cartridges), and Sony did an excellent job of marketing itself as the "cooler" system to the beer drinking jocks of the world.

There are some points I agree and disagree with in this post.

The N64 was certainly a great system with some obviously fantastic games, so it's hardly an abomination. And having cartridges definitely did not contribute to its success.

However, a huge aspect of the Playstation's success wasn't just in appealing to jocks. If you look at the hardware totals, the PS1 and NES are basically on par in terms of hardware sales in NA and Japan. The vast majority of the growth came from Europe and the developing markets. The most important thing that Sony did in terms of growing the gaming market was making millions of gamers in the PAL region enter the home console market through games that appealed to the market (e.g. Gran Turismo).

Truth be told, some of my post might have been tongue in cheek.

I do agree with you that Sony definitely expanded the market.  Many of it was due to it's advertising to the developing markets.  Another thing that Sony did well was  to be the first system to usher in the new generation of substantially better graphics.  While the N64 was more powerful, Sony did it first.  Which brings me to another point.  Sony used being first strongly to it's advantage.  They made it seem like their Playstation was the only gaming system to have.

They didnt make it seem like anything, for all intents purposes it WAS the only gaming system to buy, at least for a little while. It was out two whole years before N64, thats a long time and in that time was competing against PS??? Sega Saturn?? Yeah how long that last??

If they were abominations, what does that make the wii?

Both consoles were very very good, mostly thanks to 1rst and 2nd party development.......THEY WERENT ABINATIONS AT ALL!!!! also N64 was not a big failure in terms of sales, at least not as big as GC, which by the way was the best 128 bit console,,,,just my opinion

128bit...lol, it wasn't 128bit, it was 32bit.

N64 was a great console. Super Mario 64... Ocarina of Time... Superman 64 :D kidding!
With N64 we first experienced home console gaming with a joystick and a true 3D world with Mario 64! Not to mention rumble features!
The console itself was awesome as so was the controller... unfortunately Nintendo made a serious of big mistakes in the developer world and played for it.
I think Sony`s great advantage was expanding what Sega did with Genesis/Mega Drive: go for the cool console and go for the cool kids. Of course this meant non-kiddie like games like N64 and GC were branded with, therefore attracting an older audience.

With Sony doing everything right, Playstation became another word for videogames, like Nintendo before it.
After N64 a lot of damage was done and there wasn`t a single thing that Nintendo could do to stop PS2. No matter if Nintendo even played to developers to bring their games to GC, PS2 would still have been the great winner.
Of course it surely didn`t help releasing the console a year after PS2. That was just baaad!
Personally i had a lot of fun with GC. Not only with Nintendo games but with 3rd party games (RE4, Bloody Roar, ISS, Red Faction II, Monkey ball, Soni Ad., etc).
Great console but with a fate already set in stone!

32 bit is Playstation and Saturn isn't it. The sixth gen are all 128bit performance wise.

Chunky, slow Mario has gone as far as he can go now. He's in space, twice while real Mario hasn't left the Mushroom kingdom except for a holiday in Dinosaur land and a bad dream.

Luckily humans can't experience a 4th spatial dimension so Miyamoto is out of luck. It's time to put all that wasteful time and effort into the main series.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Nintendo are smart.

Nintendo are dumb.

Nintendo are lucky.

Nintendo are unlucky.

You could argue that Nintendo have dropped as many balls as they've picked up. Sometimes the wrong decision gets the right results and other times the right decision yields the wrong results and you can look like an idiot for doing the right thing and you can look like a genius for doing the wrong things which somehow turn out better than ok in the end. In the end you make the best decision you can with the information you have at the time, Nintendo are certainly better than average but at the same time they certainly missed their fair share of opportunities. One thing I don't buy is that Sony suddenly got dumb at the same time that Nintendo got smart and vice versa.

Tease.

It was 128bit and it's graphics card crushed the PS2's as well as it's processor. The GameCube was practically a Ferrari and the PS2 was a 4 door sedan in terms of what's under the hood. If PS2 was 128 bit, so was GameCube. So please, kindly add something to the discussion that isn't just a pointless flamebait.
