And their next console "essentially being a PC" is what will pull in the most money for them, even if they do have to get rid of backwards compatibility with the PS3 (PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility is inevitable).

Why do people keep saying this, backwards compatibility is still easily done,

Sure. An AMD processor emulating the PS3 cell processor. Even Better: An AMD processor that turned out to be subpar in performance emulating the PS3 cell processor. I believe you....

Umm no, you have no idea how software works... This is easily done through emulation. Sony will NOT make PS4 non backwards compatible.

Can be done, yes, but I doubt 4 BD cores at say 3GHz are strong enough to emulate the Cell at a reasonable speed.

You mean 4 BD modules...which would bring the performance of the chip roughly up to an Intel i5-2600. There is no way in hell such a processor would be able to emulate the cell processor (which contains 1+6 operating "cores" and a memory subsystem that is way too complex to emulate. Let's not forget the 4 module Bulldozer is a _gigantic_ chip that costs at least three times as much as the cuurent Cell chip.

If Sony really goes the "Let's make a midrange PC and call it PS4" route, this would be a catastrophic decision imo. Being out last next generation means you have probably lost right away (I doubt there is a market for three similar "look-alike PCs". And why buy a "PC look-alike" when you could buy a real gaming PC (probably for not much more)? Sony would be forced to continuously use all its first-party studios to stay alive.

Wait an X86 processor?

this would mean the ram is likely a max of 2GB

It can have 4gb including the videocard memory in an X86 system. And it would surprise me if they put that much in it.

Ugh...

ALL x86 processors on the market today are x86-64 which support 4 EXObytes of RAM. EXOBYTES.

EXOBYTES! EXOBYTES don´t matter if its not really worth more than 4gbs of ram for gaming, besides consoles tend to go for less but faster ram.

The PS4 will NOT have more than 4Gbs of Ram... oh and dont expect a god machine, i will be much cheaper thus less powerful.

Interesting. I wonder how powerful will it be.

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

lol if they go AMD they'll have another overhyped disappointment. Sony probably chose this when AMD were promising Bulldozer would be competitive.

At least if it's Fusion the graphics will be better integrated than a GPU thrown in at the last minute like PS3.

We're talking consoles here...not high end gaming PCs. I'm sure AMD can cook up a solid CPU/GPU combo for a console launching in 2014, and probably cheaper than Intel/Nvidia could for same performance.

theoretical PS4 should be cheaper since its sounds like over the counter stuff right?

Not literally.

But it is mature technology, which the Cell wasn't. Should make it cheaper.

Not true Most Recent AMD64, and Intel64 can only address 256 terabytes.  A couple of years ago it was like 1 terabyte.

If the article referred to X86 he probably referred to the system OS or something being 32-bit. Or it's reported incorrectly, and should have reported as X64, X86-64, or something else.

And anyways X64 can theoretically address 16 EXAbytes

The funny thing is Bulldozzer actually has some of the same flaws the the CELL had. As in there isn't branch prediction or cache etc for each core and there are more cores than current software can take advantage of. But bulldozzer has the flaws to a lesser dagree as it's just those things are shared by pairs of cores rather than having one true core handle those things for 7 sub cores. An 4-6 core 2nd (possibly even 3rd if PS4 releases in 2014) gen Bulldozer would kick arse in a console, whether it would be better than a 4-8 core Power 7 chip or a 4 SPU 32 SPE Cell chip tho is a mystery.

I doubt they would go for an x86 CPU tho, seems overkill for a console as most of the instructions are designed for desktop computing situations.
