Attention, PlayStation gamers – the online PlayStation Network service will be going under the knife on Thursday, March 1 for nearly the entire day. This is to address bugs, optimize performance, and perform necessary maintenance. The service is expected to be down starting at around 11:00 AM Eastern Time and will not be back online until after midnight.

 

This means that PS3 users will not be able to download videos or games, play online against other players, access services like Netflix or Hulu Plus, sign into Music Unlimited, or do anything that requires an Internet connection. The same goes for anyone trying to access online features on the PSP or PlayStation Vita. In addition, websites that use PSN authentication, like the PlayStation Blog, will not have PSN services.

This marks the first scheduled PSN downtime since the launch of the Vita in the US. Of course, for those who lived through the great PSN outage of 2011, this won’t be too big of a deal. Nevertheless, Sony says it apologizes “for any inconvenience this may cause.” Sony will announce on its PlayStation Twitter feed as soon as the service is back online. The company expects that to happen at around 1:00 AM Eastern Time on Friday.

i hope this means they will fix that:

people on the PS3 can't see Vita users online
if you read a message on Vita it still appears as a new message on PS3
2 Friends lists
Trophies can be seen on PS3 that you got on PSVita

seeing as this should already be done hopefully they take this time to do that

If it is not comprehending the leap year, then it would think Feb 20 is March 1 and that would probably cause problems.  Not sure how that would fix itself the next day though, Mar 1 vs Mar 2 ought to be just as bad?

Besides, it's only going to be down for ~13 hours not 24, there's no way a leap year bug would only affect HALF the leap day IMO.

It's not to hide the leap year bug. There was no such issue in 2008, which was a regular leap year. 2012 will also be a regular leap year.

Also, even if it was, this wouldn't do crap for it. Anything that involved the system clock was shut down with that bug. Bought games couldn't be played, online or offline. PSN games reverted to becoming demo's if they were the type that just required an unlock key. The system becomes a glorified iPod/Blu-ray with no nearby wifi hotspot.
