Forums - Sony - Sony: Low demand, cheap pricing shelved international UMD Passport

I wonder what all the gaming press will say once the PS Vita plays all those Android games that are apparently better that what the Vita has to offer?

They will say "What's the point in getting a Vita to play Android games when I already have an Android?" Which is what I ask with regards to the psp games and the vita.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Eh, that's bullshit. Let the customers decide what they want to do. I have almost 40 psp games so I sure as hell would save money by spending $5 to $10 for each game that I have rather than spending $10-40.

You know what would save more money? keeping a hold of your UMDs and playing them on your PSP...?

I get that, but it would still be so nice to play them on Vita.

I used to be against playing ps2 games on my ps3 because my reasoning was, my ps2 still works so what's the point. Whilst I love my ps3, I do sometimes find myself missing some ps2 games like Persona 4 and Final Fantasy X. Whilst I now occasionally scowl at my ps3 for not being able to play ps2 games, I am however too lazy to put together my ps2 and play said games...

I don't think the same conundrum applies to the PSP/Vita relationship. it hardly takes a minute to load up a UMD on your psp so I really don't see the point of this. You don't need to set anything up, just have your psp adequately charged and you are set. I get the feeling that like me, whilst people will occasionally hunger for PSP games, people won't play that many of them once they start building up a vita collection. Failing that, you are still allowed to play the psp downloadables you had so...it's not a big deal but this is just me I guess.

You don't see the issue with having to keep two portables charged constantly and having to carry around two portables? One of which is a very large portable gaming device. It isn't a big issue if you only play your psp/v at home or on very short trips. But what if you are using it as a portable? Going on a trip and want to play Uncharted and FF7:CC? Yea well take both devices.

Backwards compatability has been a standard in the portable industry for a long time now. The fact it doesn't exist is pretty ridiculous. The fact a system is in place where you have to rebuy your own game is even more ridiculous. The fact Sony aren't allowing Western gamers the option to use their ridiculous service is so deep into the rabbit hole of ridiculousness that it boggles the mind.

Also keep in mind that the Vita makes PSP games look nicer. So instead of carrying one device and playing games on it that look a little better you can carry two devices and play games that look a little worse.

It isn't a HUGE deal. However it is a way that Sony is comically far behind in the handheld market. It is also a pretty good way of telling your customers you don't really care about them. I'm sure Sony could actually have figured out some proper way to do backwards compatability if they had wanted.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

For owners of a PSP and DS, did they have this dilemma? Surely you carried the one that had the game you were playing at that moment in time. Do people really play that many games at the same time? On hand helds, I only play one game at a time, I must be a raindrop in the desert because this complaint comes up way to frequently for my liking.

Also, regarding the size of the Vita, if people can carry around an Ipad, I think the Vita will be fine.

The thing is that Sony already has the program to allow users to cheapily transport their UMD games to the vita. It isn't a debate about why doesn't Sony create a program to let us download out UMD games for cheaper than on the store, it is WHY doesn't Sony bring that outside of Japan. Their reason is oblivious, I see a lot of value in UMD Passport outside of Japan.

I guess ultimately, it's down to them (lulz obviously)I personally don't but hey we'll never know.

“When you compare that to the price of games here, PSP games in Japan are sold at a much higher price, so people see the value in spending the $5 to $10 to get the digital copy. But when the games are already sold at a lower price in the U.S. we see less value in introducing that kind of system. The combination of the new titles available, or the lack of, and the price difference, the company decided to do that.”

So the prices in Japan for digital copies are more expensive because of the program?  Or do they just jack the price up because they offered the program?

Game prices are overall higher in Japan than in the USA. He basically said that games in the USA are so cheap that they don't need such a programme.

Need something off Play-Asia? http://www.play-asia.com/

I suppose without the passport, it's best to wait until the games go on sale for the best deal.

When I first heard about this, I was like: "Awww man... That sucks!" But now, I think is reasonable.

Ok, don't worry! I can't read japanese either. But look at those pictures! All purchases are processed from a PSP!

Right now you're probably saying, "So what!!!?" Well, you got some attitude, Mister... Besides, you're not observing! Here is the deal: the PSP system software was completly hacked. Independent developers can do whatever they want with it, and that's the reason Sony is not even updating it anymore; they gave up.

By releasing a homebrew app capable of emulate the UMD drive to trick this service, pirates would be obtaining a license for a game they don't even have for about 5 or 10 bucks, upsetting publishers.

There's a different situation in Japan, where PSP software sold pretty well and piracy is significantly lower.

When asked about this, Yoshida answered with bullshit because he couldn't say what he was actually thinking: "Because Occident is full of dirty pirates!".

Sounds like some kind of nazi rhetoric to me.

Either a bad translation or sony needs to stop being a c*nt, sorry that's harsh and nasty language, but that is effectively how this sounds.

Don't see why this was moderated, this was a promised feature, just like with the PSP Go. Didn't they say exactly the same thing there then go back on their word at the last minute?

This is dumb. And annoying, but I'll just jailbreak the vita when I get it, it and DL it for free. (I think this will occur)

But from a business decision it kind of makes sense, if people don't get too mad, and negative publicity
And by the way psp games have been selling, I don't think there's that many people to get mad.
However, games like crisis core, can't really be played on VITA in the US. I think.... unless they released it on PSN finally.
