Forums - Gaming - Did the Xbox 360 indirectly damage the Final Fantasy brand?

i think i get his point.....so that means FF fails to be an western game in spring 2010 it sold less than bad company 2 and now it even selling less on the 360 than the new WESTERN rpg IP kingdoms of amalur....but to be fair in fact it is spuare-enix fault for blaming the franchise and not only FF also games like Kingdom hearts, dragon quest etc. for me personally square-enix is the risng-fall of this gen for me....but i am talking about quite every japanese develop team i mean like just look at capcom, resident evil 5?...REALLY?

that's a ridiculous notion. FF10-X2 is were the death of the franchise started, and FF13 finished it.

13-2 has allot of redeeming qualities, but fails on so many levels. i hated the demo. everything was just happening and you really had no control over gameplay, or the characters being used.

disagree if you must, but FF 13-2 was poorly done. square enix is the problem. the franchise obviously has no direction. it's like their attempting to make a game out of a bunch of broken ideas, instead of grounding the ideas into a more solid form.

i'll get FF13-2 when's $10 or less. it's simply not worth more then that.

go back to FF7 and 10 then you'll see wht you did wrong, in FF13(my message to square)

I wouldnt be surprised if this goes on N4G. LMAO.

They hate the 360.

Yay!!!

I'm sure you're all aware of how Final Fantasy hasn't exactly been getting perfect 10s this generation. Final Fantasy XIII sold pretty well and got good reviews but that didn't stop the media from bashing the game for is linearity and "20-hour tutorial". XIII-2 although praised as a better game, got lower reviews and as a result lower sales. Why? Fiinal Fantasy games have always been known for their quality up until XIII. So its safe to assume that XIII was overrated purely on brand name. By the time XIII-2 released the FF brand was damaged and the media was much more critical with their reviews.

Ok so how did the Xbox 360 damage the FF brand? Easy. It sold so much. Square Enix saw an opprtunity to cash-in on the Final Fantasy brand and with the dominance of the Xbox 360 in America, it was a no-brainer to go multi-platform. Of course with these multi-platform games comes Square Enix trying to appeal to the Western audience. This is where they went wrong. This is where the Xbox 360s success in America damaged Final Fantasy, indirectly. Of course, Square Enix always had the choice of keeping Final Fantasy exclusive to the PS3 so when it comes down to it, it is their fault for making poor decisions.

It wouldnt have made a difference.

Yay!!!

I think it would be better for us to wait for square-enix to make a BETTER final fantasy and not blaming companies and producers that just wanted to make more money from the ff xiii project .FF XIII is the game that released in march 2010 if you like it or not(i love the game) you can 't change the past by saying MS ruined FF XIII and if ff xiii would have been a ps3 exclusive it would have been done better and if my grandmother was an astronaut i would be working in NASA :P

I can go with indirectly, yes. If indeed SE saw $$ by putting it on 360 thinking to sell lots more of the game in America and Europe AND that lead to some important bad design decisions to try to attract a so called different 360 demographic then yeah indirectly going multiplat damaged the FF brand.

But it would be very difficult to prove these things, so I think we shouild jusy go with the simpler, SE made the bad decisions all by itself regardless of the consoles they were putting it on. Maybe they tried too hard.

Question is, can they redeem the brand with Vs XIII, XIII-3 or XV? Popular opinion would probably say not, and they should just get working on KH3.

the only one that has been damaging the series, for the last six to seven years, is square-enix.

Nah. It's all down to SE. Personally I think some problems set into the IP before FFXIII.

Do I think SE made mistakes with the release of the title associated with 360? Sure, but the problem was SEs. They should have either made the decision to support 360 earlier and got out a better port or stuck to PS3 only.

I doubt the design would have been that different though. My impression is the design was well locked in when they decided to port to 360. The port itself while decent is weaker in many regards in line with a rapid porting of a mostly finished game.

What they could have done was either got it out earlier on PS3 and not taken the negative hit for delaying to port or got it out on 360 in better shape and avoided the poorer port accusations.

Both those are fairly minor points though. I think the design of the game and its execution is what gathered the negative image and I don't believe the 360 overly influenced that.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

No, it's certainly not Microsoft's fault.

The problem is it isn't 1997 anymore. At that time FF games were hands down the most cinematic and "epic" types of games to a lot of people.

But today that's obviously changed, there's nothing special about Final Fantasy cinematics or anything like that, every game has that today.

The other thing is I think the increase in graphical horsepower has made cultural differences become more stark. Final Fantasy characters rendered more realistically really highlight how ... effeminate and strange a lot of the characters are to Western audiences. The kid buying Call of Duty isn't necessarily going to want Final Fantasy XIII, whether it's only on the PS3 or not.

Comeplete BS.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 sold worse then FFXIII for the same reason FFX-2 sold worse then FFX. It's a sequal, not a new main series game.

As a hardcore JRPG fan, let me tell you that the Final Fantasy franchise has been on a downhill slope since the SNES/PS1 era. FFXIII is by far from the worst Final Fantasy. Remember FFXIV got a 4/10 score on PC and FFXI was in a similar boat. Also I believe FFXIII sales are close to FFXII's which is good considering the difference in install base (especially in Japan).

Releasing Final Fantasy on the 360 only helped the franchise. With Japanese gamers migrating to handhelds, Square Enix needs to appeal to the western audience, and it learned from FFXIII (being overly linear).

If anything, releasing Final Fantasy on the PS3 killed the franchise. FFXIV is exclusivly not on the 360 and guess what? it's sold far worse then FFXIII and got much lower reviews.
