Forums - Gaming - Why putting an end to used games could be a good thing.

sure if games could be 5 bucks-20 bucks! but at 30-60 i do not think so only a select few titles are worth 50 even less are worth 60 so . no thanks plus theres always gonna be used games or else what happens when the gen is over ,, and people wanna trade in their older stuff huh sorry but ,. this idea is not only going to take away potentail console buys but . it will also affect the fans in the long run

theres a few scenarios
1 people like me who collect games for the said console even after its support died off-well that will do just that kill the console.

2 since its physical media i am the one taking up shelve space and when i quit gaming sure wont be anytime soon but when the inedible happens i should be able to make some oft he money i spent buying all of these games right now my value which is tracked at gamespot --not including recent buys sincei was banned earlier this yr last time i was able to see it --it was 20 thousand dollars. not counting multiple consoles of the same or the accessories . so ya . i should be able to make a small fortune of the big fortune back

3 if this happens why would this make developers happy to support a potential failure
you honestly think there are that many fa ns that will stick with ms whether or not they can buy games after the console is dead. i dont think so . .

4 wii u is not going to block out used games 1 plus nintendo wii u already right here and if ms pulls this that will make it easier on my wallet cause i ll just get a wii u and ps4 after all there are rumors of ms copying wii u pad so already i do not see hte need for 2 of the same things.

and since i only like forza of what little exclusive 360 has now. i wont be missing much

so while that sounds great that ill never have to end up w a scuffed up game it does not sound good if i want to replace a game i already bought new or missed out due to other good games ,

you have to out weigh the situation , before making this conclusion it sounds nice on devlopers but the blocking of used games promotes less sells of new consoles because of people like me who like to just collect no matter hwat age the co nsole is or if youve been trhough more then 1 copy of gta iv youll understand i will not be paying 60 times the amount for the same game
sorry idea has little possitives to out weigh all the negatives

Around the Network

Anyone who thinks that publishers would be raking in the cash if there were no used game sales has a very poor understanding of economics. The gain would be minimal, and the overall impact would be negative as the total game-buying consumer base shrinks. Niche developers in particularly could be hurt very badly as the total number of people introduced to their games would shrink. I would very likely never have played the Disgaea series (I don't own a PSP) without used game sales.

So many people are, quite foolishly, convinced that getting rid of used game sales would have a big impact on the money that publishers get. It won't. The total amount of money going into gaming will SHRINK. Because money is NOT static. With used game sales, money transfers between players, and that plays a big role in the money that moves through the gaming industry. Moves, key word. That's what economics is all about, the movement of money and goods.

When people can't sell their used games, they build up an inventory of games they don't play. These aren't doing anyone a bit of good. It's like stacks of cash sitting in the bank, it doesn't contribute to the economy. Today, people can turn those used games into economic activity by selling them to other gamers. They often use that money to buy more games - new or used. People think the publisher can take over the however-many-billion dollars that go through the used game market, but they can't. They just can't. Because that money is generated largely by gamers who sell their games, and turn around and buy more. Shutting down the used games industry will only get rid of that activity, NOT funnel it into publishers and developers. It will be a net loss for the economy as a whole. Publishers will see a slight increase in profits, but by limiting trade, several billion dollars of economic activity will simply vanish.

Since we all are going to a completly Digital distrubution system, on the PC and iOS i already have, it's just a matter of time that people won't care that there ain't any used games at all...

I wouldn't mind it if it were to bring new game prices down at least a good 25-33% or so across the board.

There's no reason in hell to justify a $60 pricetag of a downloadable only, non-transferable piece of software that come next gen will be much cheaper to produce as manufacturing is cut down on and the cost of software development reaches its plateau rather than continuing to increase.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

The only way that could possibly happen is if a lack of used game sales increased publisher profits by 40% or more.  That's not speculation, that's simple math. But that kind of profit increase simply isn't possible (see my previous post)  Gamers will see zero benifit from the demise of used game sales.  It would put a little more money in publishers pockets, but it would inconvenience gamers, lower fan bases, and stifle a thriving second-hand economy.  It's just bad all around except for money-hungry CEOs.
