I thought there were plenty of new IPs this generation, many of them turned out great and I hope they continue into later gens

...If anything, many great series didn't get enough games this gen imo

I have to agree with this!

I'm currently more interested in contiuing playing several franchises/IP's than seeing new ones created.

Which ones?  Most of the new IPs this generation are already on 2, 3, or 4 in the game series.  I don't have too much room to talk since Mario went from 1-3 on the NES but you can't be dying for too many new IPs that haven't had a sequel.  Basically, if the new IP didn't bomb then they made a sequel asap this generation.

I think there needs some clarity between asking for new IP's and asking for games which really take a risk or dare to innovate beyond the norm. Sure enough there are tons of new IP's but there's a difference between something like Darksiders or Dead Space, which are new IP's that cover the same ground as previous games, and something like Catherine or Heavy Rain which really is totally different to anything.

No one dares take a risk anymore as games cost more to make and the stakes become higher then ever. It's a worrying trend but should at least open up more room for the indie games / smaller games to come through and make a name for themselves. Theres only so much a small indie team can do though.

So what if they made a sequel? This is what I'm talking about. The millisecond an IP gets a sequel people freak out and suddenly it is old news. New IPs should be considered on a generation to generation basis. Oh and every generation has seen successful games get a sequel immediately. FF1-3 on the NES, Sonic 1-3 on the mega drive etc etc.

New IPs from this gen that don't have a sequel off the top of my head. Shadows of the damned, Mirrors edge, vanquish, brutal legend, Lost odyssey, bayonetta, shadow complex, castle crashers, ilomilo, limbo, braid, zeno clash, costume quest, hydrophobia, Wet, kameo, Lair. Sure there are hundreds more.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

Gaming isn't mainstream?

I was talking about sequels to older series, like I don't think we got enough Fire Emblem, Pikmin, 2D Mario, Final Fantasy, Tales, a real Paper Mario....etc

Though I wouldn't mind sequels to Prince of Persia 08 (I consider it totally different than old PoP games), No More Heroes, Mirror's Edge, World of Goo...

Anyways, so what if they made a sequel, if you like it a lot then you always want more :3

I'm looking forward to:

Announced:

  • Mass Effect 3
  • Halo 4 (5 & 6 later on)
  • Assassin's Creed 3 (Not really announced, but we all know it's coming)
  • Beyond Good & Evil 2 (Very silent, but technically speaking it's been announced)
  • GTA 5

Unannounced:

  • Star Wars: Battlefront 3
  • Mirror's Edge 2
  • Legend of Zelda (WiiU)
  • Crysis 3
  • Lost Oddesey 2
  • Jade's Empire 2
  • Star Wars: Knight of The Old Republic 3 (A RPG, not a MMORPG)
  • GRID 2
  • Banjo *whatever name*

Basically what I mean is, I personally don't need many new IP's at the moment, I really can happily settle for new installments (If they're quality) in exsisting franchises.

Yea, it isn't like I am bitching too much about a new IP getting sequel right away considering when people accuse Nintendo of just releasing the same game with every new console. If they played the games then they would know that most of their games are pretty unique even though they carry basically the same name.

I suppose the only thing I want to point out to bad sequel releasing practices would be examples such as Guitar Hero. Where you destroy the entire IP through multiple releases within the same year.

If developers really want to make more new IPs, they know what they must do: swallow their pride, decrease their technical ambitions, and build something leaner

Why can't a great, "serious" (though by god do i hate to use that term) game be made for something less than bleeding-edge tech levels?

I suppose that is where WW, XBL, and PSN games come into play.  They focus more on gameplay than graphics usually.

Not even that. I'm not even saying leave the PS3 or the 360 (despite my apathy for both devices), but rather that you can simply make a game that isn't meant to compete with the blockbusters, just focus on making something that is good and original, but can also turn a profit

The comparisons to the movie industry are easiest. It is clear in the film industry that not everything is meant to win an oscar, nor is it meant to be a box-office smash. The problem with the games industry is that you often see developers trying to get both, and that limits them in what they can do (genres that generally afford greater prestige, and genres in which games are known to sell better, which leans immediately in the direction of established brands)

Work outside the pale, but swallow your artistic pride and cut budgets to do it.

Mr. Khan nails it

Time for hype

There has been a lot of talk of need for new ips, but i have played a lot of new ips this gen. I dont play on xbox live arcade either. I think people expect sequels to new ips far too soon. I am fine with a new ip only having one game a gen and then doing number 2 on the next gen, or just 2 releases a gen. I would rather have good qaultiy games instead of quick turn around cash ins.

I don't understand how anybody could compare this gen to any previous gen in a positive light when considering the creation of new IPs. This gen has been somewhat disappointing in this regard despite some gems such as Super Meat Boy.
