He's talking about shipped?

We're never going to hear the fucking end of this now.

If you could find the link of them saying that then that would clear it all up wouldn't it. Until then you are making things up. Even in your link there are no official comments from MS. It is an interpretation of their released numbers by people on here.

But okay I will put forward a different point for you then.

Did or did not Sony actually reduce their forecast on their projected PS3 sales in their quarter report? And was that by one million units? On top of this other then MS have any of the other companies actually claimed they were the top selling console for 2011? Because if everything you said was true why didn't Sony come out and say that in what was a pretty damaging quarterly report? Surely by saying something like that would give investors a bit of hope in the Sony brand? Especially considering it's market value has dropped by nearly 50% over the same period last year?

All I see from you is assumption, no actual facts to back up your claims. Shouting it louder doesn't make it right. The FACT Sony predicted less sales for the PS3 would indicate that they themselves over-estimated demand. Could even be they have over-shipped themselves. But that can't possibly be true can it?

As for the adjustments who says 2m on shelves for 360 and 1.7m on shelves for PS3 is right? Where did you get those numbers from? Who is to say there isn't 1.5m 360's on shelves or 2m ps3's on shelves?

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-08-24-microsofts-chris-lewis-interview

Eurogamer: So when you say number one you mean sales?

Chris Lewis: I mean purely install base with consumers. We don't count units unless they're actually out there and installed. This isn't shipments. This isn't revenue. This is install base of consoles.

The discussion that has been rampant for the past couple months has ALWAYS been about sales to consumer, not shipments (the thing this site tracks).  It's only recently when it looks that 360 didn't actually outsell the PS3 has some tried to change the discussion to be about shipments and/or profits.  We're here just to keep things on track.

Maybe I am not understanding this but surely saying number one in terms of install base means you have sold more to the public? I don't get how that information strengthens the PS3's argument of winning the year exactly?

Xbox 360 tops 2011 console sales charts

The Xbox 360 has been dominating the console sales charts for the past couple of months and has now been branded the best-selling console of 2011. Microsoft’s console beat its main rival Sony by a mere 800,000 units with the Xbox 360 selling 14.9 million to PS3’s 14.1 million. The Wii fell short with 10.33 million units. The Xbox was propelled into the top spot after a successful holiday period, with Microsoft selling 2.5 million units more than Sony over the months of October, November and December.

This was the first time Microsoft had topped the holiday sales charts since 2006 when the PS3 and Wii were just being launched. It was also the first time they had led the annual sales charts ever.

Microsoft’s videogame chief, Don Mattrick, stated last year at E3 that Xbox 360 would become the number 1 console around the world.

However, Nintendo still holds the crown for most units sold overall, with its 95 million Wiis sold compared to Microsoft and Sony’s 66 million and 62 million respectively.

I wouldn't trust that article. Their numbers are totally off.

That's not WW and the numbers were 11.07 for 360 and 11.04 for PS3 iirc. Anyway, I'm out of here. You others can keep on going in circles in this thread. There will be no major adjustments, I'm pretty sure of that.

Quit trolling, Xbox lost in sales not shippings, get over it. It doesn't matter, sales matter.

It was Sony gamers that made "Sold trough"more important instead of Shipments.

Shipments have always been more important to a company.

And you do understand that according to MS' lastest financial report that there is a 65.8 mil INSTALL BASE. Which means sold to consumers.

@ bold. O_o Really? I think every company in the world will say it's end consumers buying their product that is the measure of the success of a product. Shipment figures, esp short term, can be subject to manipulation to make a company look good. MS being able to claim #1 spot for a calendar year gives them rather substantial bragging rights.

Anyway, looking at the latest big 3 shipment update article from The Soure http://www.vgchartz.com/article/88795/the-big-three-shipment-update-through-december-2011/ it's clear that according to VGC retail sales estimates and the official life time shipment figures the yet to be sold to consumers number as at 31 Dec 2011 for 360 is ~2.1 million, and for PS3 it's ~1.7 million. Both seem to have stuffed the channels a bit in Q4 2011. Either MS stuffed the channels a tad more, or VGC is a tad under tracked. But by the same token PS3 could be a tad undertracked too. Though I think 1.5-1.8 million in the retail system at the end of the holidays is probably not unreasonable. So VGC retail estimate for 360 could be bumped up 3-400K or so. That would put retail sales of 360 just shy of 14 million for 2011, and PS3 would likely remain unadjusted at a smidge over 14 million for the year.

I think if Q1 2012 shipments to suggest a >2 million difference between shipped and sold for 360 then the VGC number would need to be in for some significant adjustment. I don't see the retail channels carrying 10 weeks or more of stock into the slowest sales quaters of the year, not unless there's an imminent large price cut.

Oh btw, your 65.8 million is 360's LTD shipped figure as at 31 Dec 2011, not sold through, ref. same article from The Source.

The PS3 has not sold 62 million and the Xbox 360 has most definitely not sold 66 million.

I don't know where they got the numbers from, but they aren't right. It seems to be another case of counting shipped as sold.
