Forums - Sony - Opinion: it's time for Sony to drop the "PlayStation" brand from consoles

I don't think they could do it.

Not a fan of Sony or the PlayStation, but even I think this would be a bad idea.

I could see changing the PSN name so it was more inclusive of the other businesses, but not the device itself.

The last thing is drop the Playstation, that's their bread and butter. They just need to do a better job! If they go TV, they need to start bundling in Playstation software in them ASAP and go budget price.

Rather, PS is the key to their success mostly in the TV business, which is their downfall at the moment.

They can keep the Playstation brandname, but they need to change their image. They are too "core", they need to casual-ize their look and feel (marketing, console design). Take that change, and stamp it onto the gaming TVs in the hypothetical pipeline, and you have sales leveraging effective brand and image.

I don't quite understand what you meant there.

Sony is taking a beating in the TV sector. If they use the PS brand and integrate into their TV business (with the previously announced Playstation TVs), and price those gaming TVs right, their TV sector should be totally revamped.

The PSP actually did remarkably well all things considered. Beating Nintendo at the handheld game was a longshot but Sony did manage to snag a respectable amount of marketshare. The PS3 suffered not because it had Playstation in the name, but because it was launched at $599 with its biggest title being a WW2/Alien FPS (which at the time was completely outclassed by Gears of War in hype). And now the Vita is suffering because of a relatively high price point and no hit games.

It's not rocket science. Instead of dropping the Playstation name, make a console with a reasonable price point, a variety of media features, and games that people want to play. Considering that the PS1 and PS2 were successful at a $299 launch price point, maybe that's a good target to aim for.

KAZFACE

I dunno why, but I always get an overwhelming Cho Aniki vibe from that picture. (That is to say, I get an erection.)

That would just hurt them even more. There is no point in dropping the name, it has been there forever.

I disagree, taking away the Playstation brand would probably do more damage to them.

The "Vita" is confusing a few people, they should of called it "Playstation Portable 2" imo lol.

Their more than likely going to start charging for PSN next gen at a low amount compared to +.

Something tells me their other divisions will get erased before the Gaming division (even though the gaming division is probably what is costing them so many losses more than the other aspects).

But re-branding is a no, why would they re-brand now when they got to "3".

The VITA's name isn't hurting it, or at least it shouldn't. The PSP was always called PSP I barely ever heard someone call it it's full name. The VITA's problems don't lay with it's name.
