Nintendo Widens Full-Year Loss Forecast on Lower Sales of 3DS Players, Yen

Nintendo Co. (7974), the world’s largest maker of video-game machines, widened its full-year loss forecast, citing lower sales for its 3DS handheld player and a stronger yen.
Net loss in the year ending in March may be 65 billion yen ($838 million), compared with an earlier forecast for a 20 billion-yen loss, the Kyoto, Japan-based company said in a statement today.
Nintendo plans to sell 14 million units of the 3DS model now, down from an earlier forecast of 16 million units, according to the statement. The creator of “Super Mario Bros.” games is predicting its first annual loss in at least three decades as the yen surged and consumers’ preference for gaming on the iPhone and iPad helped Apple Inc. (AAPL) more than double profit in the quarter.
“Nintendo’s profitability may get lower in the long term because people are starting to stay away from video-game consoles,” Tomoaki Kawasaki, a senior analyst at Cosmo Securities Co. in Tokyo with a “neutral” rating on the stock, said before the earnings release. “The yen’s gain is a burden for Nintendo as it hasn’t taken sufficient measures to deal with the impact of the strong currency.”
