Forums - Sony Discussion - Four Reasons You'll Never See an HD Final Fantasy VII Remake

Tagged games:

FFVII fans don't realize that it is just not popular anymore and it will never sell enough to make it worthwhile, especially since it would only sell to old fans and would no way draw in the fps/action audience.

for a company struggling, wouldn't the smart bet be to make and release a game they know would sell well, especially when they don't even need to take the time to redesign shit?

It just seems like a relatively quick thing to do, and it'd sell 5 million at least. I don't know why they chose to release FFX as a remake on PSV/PSP but not this.

I kind of want a FFVI remake, but something inside me isn't too keen on that, since the VI advance port was pretty definitive, and that game doesn't need fancy HD graphics.

My Console Library:

PS5, Switch, XSX

PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, WiiU, Wii, GCN, N64 SNES, XBO, 360

3DS, DS, GBA, Vita, PSP, Android

That could actually be a GOOD thing.

Final Fantasy X would be a lot faster and easier to remake, it's the second most popular Final Fantasy game and they are testing the waters with it. The sales of FFX HD will probably be the decider of whether they make a Final Fantasy VII remake or not. By the time Final Fantasy X HD is out, they will probably have the development kits of the next generation consoles, the earlier they start the better.

My god, all I know is that they'll ruin it. I'd prefer FF6 remake or FFXV first.

... infact just FFXV, I miss Final Fantasy.

Hmm, pie.

Nothing the article says convinces me that, there won't be a remake.

1. "They would have done it by now". No, the opportunity spoken of in the early 2000s was mainly filled with spins offs and ways to expand the FF Universe, non of which had the production values of an original FF title. More importantly Square were simultaneously making FFX, FFXI and FXII from 2001, where would they find room for a full scale FFVII remake? On top of that the ps2's hardware was not powerful enough to warrant a remake of the most cherished FF title, especially with Advent children showing everyone what the FF universe is supposed to look like when unimpeded by hardware.

`2. "they've said no for 6 years." Thats becuase the last 6 years has had their teams dedicated towards making Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy (FFXIII, FFvXIII, FFt0, FFXIII-2) and FFXIV. A full on HD remake would warrant a more prestigious team, then those who have worked on the the DS titles or Crystal chronicles. As the majority of the bespoken titles have now been released, a FFVII remake is more likely then now then has been in the last 6 years.

3"It would take too long". No. It will take long, but thats the nature of video game production. Video game development cycles have stayed relatively stable; 2-4 years. FFXIII development for ps3 started in 2005 and square has already stated that the 4-5 year devlopement cycle (FFXII's was 6 years!!) is due to them creating the crystal engine which delayed the games production. We're now well into this generation of titles, development time will be reduced.

"Theres no money". Nonsense. A FFVII remake is probably the most profitable investments square could make, naturally it will steal resources and probably delay whatever numbered title it gets release in front of (FFXVI) but it would probably sell well into double digits (millions) and would definitely be multiplatform, unless sony buys exclusivity.

The announcement of the FFX remake should give 7 fans all the hope in the world. Its said to be using the FFXIII's engine! Square will slowly make their way through the series' back cataloge. For those wandering, their remaking X to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

The only reason it's not coming is because Square doesn't like money, look at what they've done with some things recently and you'll know.
