Forums - Microsoft - Did 300 Workers at an Xbox 360 Factory Threaten Mass Suicide?

http://mashable.com/2012/01/10/did-300-workers-at-an-xbox-360-factory-threaten-mass-suicide/

Three hundred Chinese factory workers who manufacture Microsoft Xbox 360s threatened mass suicide last week, according to unconfirmed reports.

Can't confirm.  Not sure if the factory was making xbox360 or not - they won't say.

And they have anti-suicide nets around the factory?  wth?  Would love to see the pictures.

why would they commit suicide?  “Workers always have excessive and forced overtime in order to gain a higher wage,” says the report. “Workers are exposed to dust from construction site and shop floor without adequate protection. Even worse, they are threatened by potential harm of occupational diseases in various departments. Additionally, military-styled management is still in practice, characterized by ‘military training’ for new workers.

Heard about this, suicide rates amongst factory workers in China is of course awfully high. Such a shame they seem to work them like dogs.

If you commit suicide in your work hours in China, your family receives the equivalent to 10 years of salary. Some people commit suicide to provide a better future to their families, as sad as it sounds. Foxconn agreed to increase the salary of its workers, and to reduce the extra payment if someone dies at work hours, so it isn't encouraged.

Uh heard about this company and those nets on tv more than a year ago, so unfortunately nothing new and I doubt they'd be even more inclined to jump off the roof because they might make 360's there.

Have to agree with Mach, if you really want, you can clear those nets :-p

A running jump off the roof and you'd surely clear the nets.

Yeah I don't see how preventive those are. And it looks like a prison! :(

.......wow, to actually make nets to prevent suicides, must have f***ed up minds to kill yourself, they'll just replace them, cant they quit from their jobs (asking cause I'm not sure if they have a contract which would affect their will to quit or not)

What I have read they wanted to quit their jobs so they did and Foxconn supposedley told them they would get compensasion (?) but they ended up "termenating" the compensasion (?) so they threatened to kill themeselves for lying to them about it. *rough summary of what I read*

(?)= I'm not sure if that's what you call it.
