Forums - Gaming - Microsoft First To Bring Us 360 Degree Touchable Holograms

Bit Rebels

2012 is going to be an exciting year when you look at what some companies are saying they are bringing tothe table for us users. There is so much innovation going on that we can’t stop being excited about what kind of gadgets might come out of all this innovation. One thing is for certain though, and that is, we will see a whole new set of technologies coming onto the market this year. At least this is true if you look at what all the attendingcompanies at the CES convention are saying they will showcase. But as we know, just because they demo their latest technology, that doesn’t really mean that we will see it on the market anytime soon. But we can always hope, right?

One thing in particular that people are overly excited about is Microsoft’s announcement that they have managed to create the first 360 degree touchable holograms. If you are a huge Star Wars fan like me, you know that ever since you saw Luke Skywalker watch the hologram video by Princess Leia, you’ve been wondering when you would see holograms in real life. Sure, we have seen them in movies over and over again, but the technology to create real ones has not really measured up to the ones in the movies.

Judging by this video released recently by Microsoft, things are definitely moving in the right direction. I just find it amazing that we will soon be able to mess about with a 3D object as if we were touching a real physical object in real time. Whenever this will be incorporated into our daily lives is of course really hard to say, but the uses are unlimited and it could possibly alter the way we do everything on a computer in the future. This prototype is very limited in its resolution, but I think the reason for that is they are researching the interaction part right now, suggesting the resolution of the images isn’t really going to be much of a problem. By the looks of it, we are definitely closing in on real world interactive holograms. Badass!

Im pretty sure Japan did this first and in a more dynamic fashion with their Vocaloid concerts. Could be wrong though.

...uhh...ill just put my favorite quote of all time here.

"Welcome to Pain, the second of three...You have dealt the first...now deal with me!!"

What your talking about was just video projected on a semi-transparent screen on stage. The audience only sees the virtual singer from one angle. This new process creates an optical illusion of a 3D object viewable from 360 degrees while allowing for physical interaction.

This is flipping awesome! I mean the hologram is running on 10 FPS and its darn small. But weve got to start somewhere right?

Yay!!!

THis is much better than that last pos they were working on, Lightscribe or something.

I'm sorry but this is really, really lame.

All they did was take pre-existing tech and added a kinect senser to track motion. Back in 2009 this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-P1zZAcPuw was demonstrated showing an even better version of this, just without a volumetric 3D display for 360 degree viewing. Also my last comment is this isn't a hologram! Stop in-correctly using hologram to describe sans glasses 3d displays!

Veemer was a smaller device. Heck, I think even transportable. Veemer was able to use the "Physics" more realistically. This video that you showed us only interacts with a limited umount of "Physics". Like a raindrop just falling appart, and a bouncing ballgoing in just one direction. While the veemer was able to recreate a collapse of a number of holographic cubes stacked together. Even able to interact with fingers and not just one surface like the one you showed on the video.

See the difference?

Yay!!!

I'm sorry about being direct but you have no idea what you're talking about. No way in the world is Veemer transportable or even smaller. You do understand what's under the table, don't you? It's a mirror spinning super fast reflecting light from a super high quality custom projector. Physics on the other hand is at least a valid statement but again pointless. You are saying because one system has better computer plugged up into it it's better? So if we are comparing two monitors the different computers running them should affect which screen is better? Along with this the user of the Veemer does not feel anything upon touching the image while the video I posted has tactile feed back. The sad part is the video I posted is itself lame within the world of 3D displays.
