Is this first time that second place console is outliving the winner of its generation (PSP vs. DS)?

I'd imagine that the DS would have better sales if Nintendo had actually dropped the price for it. As it is now the DSi is the exact same price as the 3DS! There is really no reason to buy a Dsi as the 3DS can play all of those DS games and more (3DS games). The DSi XL is actually more expensive than the 3DS by about 2,000 yen!
The 3DS has effectively taken over for the DS now in Japan. I'm guessing the PSV will start siphoning off PSP sales as well once it's been out longer and has more games available.

Me since the games were revealed, the fanboys since E3."

It would be doing better if it had games that Japanese people like to play.

What a changing year it has been in Japan. The 3DS' redemption, PS3's surge over Wii, PS Vita's opening disaster, Level-5's latest games all failing and Final Fantasy's death.

Yes with that huge price cut for 3DS it's not wonder that DS died so quickly. Still it's historical as far as gaming indrustry goes or at least I don't remember similar case.
Nintendo could still sell so many DS´s if they wanted - by dropping the price. Heck I would by an XL over a 3DS, which I am not buying until after the first revised model sees the light of day. I am curious to see if MP9, DQX and an overdue price cut are enough to prevent the Wii from dropping below 500k this year.
PS3 should easily stay over 1 million, so let´s see what what 2012 has in store for the Vita, 3DS and the PSP.

Well it did have some really great high selling years in Japan which is why it's the highest selling system ever in Japan. Having sold almost 33 million to a country with a population of 126 million is just crazy! Saturation plus Nintendo's kick in the butt to get the 3ds moving has effectively ended the Ds' life.
The PSP is still riding pretty high from it's success these past 2 years or so. It took awhile for the 3DS to effectively take over for the DS. Once the PSV does the same, PSP sales should tail off as well. Definitely interesting, but not unexpected given Nintendo's actions.

Like FFXIII and FFXIII-2? Many titles are multiplatform in Japan but they just don't sell a lot on 360 |
FF13 was 1 year time delay exclusive ps3.
Not surprising that people already bought the ps3 at that time.
360 was doing well when it was buying all those exclusive jrpgs a couple years ago. They've stopped since, and now they don't really have anything. On top of that, all the games that 360 had timed exclusive, were then released on ps3 with all sorts of additional content. Really, all the multiplat games that are in Japan, are made better on teh ps3.
MS stopped caring, then so did gamers.
