The people who said only outlaws will have guns are absolutely spot on. The people still clinging to the right to own guns to "overthrow" the government need to put tin foil hats on and get into their bunkers.
Seriously, look at the news, there ARE whackjobs that want/try to "overthrow" establishment" the militia in Adrien Michigan, Gifford's shooter in Arizona, these people live and breath that mentality that its there "CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT" to make those decisions because its their right to own firearms. And yet, people still mouth breath enough to not understand that in world has changed drastically in 250 years, a british soldier is not going to try to be housed in you home, yeah, paranoia yadayadyada, it aint happening.
What needs to happen is there needs to be a 2 month waiting period on purchasing a firearm from time of application to delivery of license etc. until purchase.
There needs to be an immediate shutdown of the manufacturing of semi-automatic and automatic weapons in the US outside of military use.
There needs to be serious designated firearms distributers and scaled back manufacturing of ALL guns. This means reduced if not banned traveling gun shows, license restrictions on lacation of purchase/selling. There needs to be a fine line between making to too difficult for responsible gun owners to obtain a gun and too easy for those who shouldnt but telling people a 3rd party spot where thousands of firearms are going to be available just makes it easier to fudge paperwork or the wrong person acquiring a gun outside of a normal retailer.
If your household owns a gun it should be a LAW that everyone residing in your household is trained to use the gun and is educated on firearms in a registered class and obtains a graduation certificate. If its to protect your HOME then the license must be for your HOME not your PERSON.
Gun control has nothing to do with unarming citizens but everything to do with maximizing the proper people getting them. As a staunch supporter of more strict gun control laws (obviously haha), I do feel while it is very easy to point to guns and see an easy case to be made, it really isnt a priority at this point in our snapshot in time of this country but should be constantly addressed and dialogue needs to be taking place about legislation.
As I have seen from the tea party, a group of people exercising their right to vote can be just as dangerous to our country as a lunatics right to buy a firearm (background checks are a joke) perhaps moreso in the grand scheme and most states to my knowledge only require a 70% on the written exam (correct me if im wrong)
The other main problem is its turned into a "Theyre gunna take ma guns" vs "Guns only kill people, think of the children!!!" debate. Realistically, it should be much harder own a gun and also realistically its the person not the gun that does the killing. But there are simply no use for semi-automatic and automatic weapons in society and the ease of purchase needs to be reevaluated.
If your reason to own a gun is for possible revolt, you dont deserve to own a gun in 2012. Period.
PS: The tea party comment was in jest :)
