I think gun ownership is idiotic, a practice done only by hunters and paranoid nut jobs.

I also think people should have a right to be hunters, or paranoid nut jobs.

Gun ownership is a lot like drug use (which is funny because people advocating for personal freedom in one usual are against personal freedom in the other) The VAST majority of gun owners will never shoot a person, and the vast majority of those who do will do so in self defense, just like the VAST majority of drug users will never have their choices impact a single other person negatively.  You can't use the "possibilty of damage" to justify stripping people of personal liberties.

What Americans REALLY need to learn is that we should not be telling people what we think they should and should not be doing in the privacy of their own home.

Also, 2 side notes.

1.) An armed militia will NEVER be able to overthrow the government. I can't believe people compare it to Iraq. Even if you get 1000 people with AK 47s, a squadron of tanks could easily roll in and squash them. The 2nd amendment was really only applicable when both sides (government and citizens) had access to the same arms. Republicans bloating of the defense budget has ensured that those days are gone forever

2.) I grew up with a Swedish step mother and Scandanavian socialism will NEVER work here. We have a much more achievement oriented society, where we are willing to sacrifice a standard of living for potential gain through ingenuity and hard work. What is unfortunate, is that the "American Dream" seems to be disappearing as the insane balance of wealth shift that has occurred over the last 3 decades has made it increasingly difficult for the average man to get these achievements.

I tried but I can't see how gun ownership is anything like drug use but, okay?   Also, you can bury your head in the sand all you want about paranoia, these are your opinions and you are welcome to them.  The hogwash about a squadron of tanks crushing a thousand people is simply laughable, though.  If that were true America would have been in and out of Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam in a matter of weeks.  I myself can go down the street to my local sporting goods store and make anti tank mines and many other types of explosives.  Plus, 1000 people would only be the beginning.

People like you have underestimated the power of a people's will to be free throughout history and been proven wrong perpetually.

Both are personal choices that MAY impact others if practice by irresponsible people.  Both are done by millions of people without having impact on anyone else.  Both are railed against by groups of people because of their POTENTIAL impact on others.  How do you not see how they are the same?

Comparing an external, unpopular occupation with the attempt to overthrow the government by treasonous buffoons, and the show of force for each, is worse than laughable.

No, guns shouldn't be outlawed. That's just silly. Than only criminals would have guns.

Why outlaw guns? Just outlaw murder. That ought to solve the problem, surely.

Absolutely NOT.

People should be armed with whatever they choose to own.
People should be held accountable for their actions, harshly if need be.

Exactly.  People should be free to make their own decisions about their lives.  They should also be held responsible for the impact their decisions have on other people.

Don't tell me I can't do something because my idiot neighbor did it and hurt someone.

I see, so gun ownership is also the same thing as Religion, Homosexual Relationships, Heterosexual Relationships and Food.  Sorry I didn't know you were going that broad.

I was using those as a reference for squadrons of tanks being defeated by people with AK's.

Anywho, when the government is run by treasonous buffoons ... ah forget it.

Guns or not, there will always be murder and other crimes. Difference is, with a gun in your hand you are more capable to defend yourself and others.

The people who said only outlaws will have guns are absolutely spot on. The people still clinging to the right to own guns to "overthrow" the government need to put tin foil hats on and get into their bunkers.

Seriously, look at the news, there ARE whackjobs that want/try to "overthrow" establishment" the militia in Adrien Michigan, Gifford's shooter in Arizona, these people live and breath that mentality that its there "CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT" to make those decisions because its their right to own firearms. And yet, people still mouth breath enough to not understand that in world has changed drastically in 250 years, a british soldier is not going to try to be housed in you home, yeah, paranoia yadayadyada, it aint happening.

What needs to happen is there needs to be a 2 month waiting period on purchasing a firearm from time of application to delivery of license etc. until purchase.

There needs to be an immediate shutdown of the manufacturing of semi-automatic and automatic weapons in the US outside of military use.

There needs to be serious designated firearms distributers and scaled back manufacturing of ALL guns. This means reduced if not banned traveling gun shows, license restrictions on lacation of purchase/selling. There needs to be a fine line between making to too difficult for responsible gun owners to obtain a gun and too easy for those who shouldnt but telling people a 3rd party spot where thousands of firearms are going to be available just makes it easier to fudge paperwork or the wrong person acquiring a gun outside of a normal retailer.

If your household owns a gun it should be a LAW that everyone residing in your household is trained to use the gun and is educated on firearms in a registered class and obtains a graduation certificate. If its to protect your HOME then the license must be for your HOME not your PERSON.

Gun control has nothing to do with unarming citizens but everything to do with maximizing the proper people getting them. As a staunch supporter of more strict gun control laws (obviously haha), I do feel while it is very easy to point to guns and see an easy case to be made, it really isnt a priority at this point in our snapshot in time of this country but should be constantly addressed and dialogue needs to be taking place about legislation.

As I have seen from the tea party, a group of people exercising their right to vote can be just as dangerous to our country as a lunatics right to buy a firearm (background checks are a joke) perhaps moreso in the grand scheme and most states to my knowledge only require a 70% on the written exam (correct me if im wrong)

The other main problem is its turned into a "Theyre gunna take ma guns" vs "Guns only kill people, think of the children!!!" debate. Realistically, it should be much harder own a gun and also realistically its the person not the gun that does the killing. But there are simply no use for semi-automatic and automatic weapons in society and the ease of purchase needs to be reevaluated.

If your reason to own a gun is for possible revolt, you dont deserve to own a gun in 2012. Period.

PS: The tea party comment was in jest :)

Should crossbows be outlawed too? They can easily kill people too you know.
