I think it will be pretty much like this gen.
Nintendo with the least powerful (though thankfully at least with some decent power behind it this time). Focus will be the Tablet controller and a better online experience.
MS with a machine that's developer friendly and quite powerful. Focus will be on the dashboard with all it's apps, XBL, advertising revenue and Kinect v2.
Sony will force some exotic propriety technology onto the machine for the benefit of the conglomerate as a whole rather than just the gaming division. Only a few in-house developers with a large budget and time on their hands can fully exploit this new fangled tech that no one has heard of just yet. Most powerful out of the 3 but a pain in the ass to develop for initially. Sony will stick to their guns but hope they can strategise better this time around so as not to lose so much market share and not release so much later.
Certainly not Wii U.
I think Sony learned it's lesson from dominating the market last gen with the least powerful system (PS2) to losing this gen with the most powerful system (PS3).
Power does not equate to sales and historically the most powerful system has never won. Never even been close to 1st.
I think Sony will focus more on ninfty features and coming out with a reasonable priced machine than pure power. I also don't think they won't want to lose as much (if any) on each system sold as they did with PS3 - a loss they'll probably never recover with PS3 sales.
Which leaves MS to come out with the most powerful system (again). However, I think MS will try to again beat Sony to market by six months to a year, so that even though next box may launch at the highest price, it'll be in line with the PS4's price once it comes out thanks to price drop(s).

Let me explain a little further. If Nintendo is using (licensing) DirectX from MS that mean developers could develop on the WiiU, PC and Xbox at the same time. It will greatly booth 3rd party support for Nintendo. I think MS will want to save something for their consol, thus the NextBox will be more powerful than the WiiU with say a grade higher DirectX. (getting into Cameron’s Avatar quality.) Plus all the voice/movement interaction with KinectNext will want raw power. As others have stated, the most powerful doesn't always win - and I think Sony will not try to compete on power, but be different. Sure the PS4 will be plenty powerful, like a bit more than the WiiU if it comes out later, but not that much more. I think Sony will put the money into 'Must Have' games to sell the system over 'buy this power for bragging rights.' A reasonably priced PS4, and a few killer games, from Sony might help them saturate the market like they did with the PS2. You just need a few ‘Must Have’ games that appeal to different people to sell a system. PS On another subject, who else is predicting an HD Zelda Twilight Princess re-tooled for the WiiU? (possibly with Motion+) |
Ironically I was just talking about this with my adult son. He's not fond of LoZ:SS but loves the controls. He was saying he'd rather they rerelease LoZ:TP with the same controls and I said it'd make more sense to upgrade it to HD and release that early in the WiiU's life to boost the library and promote the awesome controls in a way LoZ:SS can't on a dying system.

The way I see it, Ocarina of Time remake should´ve gone to the WiiU...you could see the difference between the N64 and 3DS versions, but imagine that game with all the power provided by the WiiU!...a remake of a game of that caliber shouldn´t have been confined to such a small screen, in my opinion at least.
Should´ve saved it for the WiiU :(
PS4 wins this round, BUT....
Therefore i conclude that all consoles will match each other in power, even if a console is a year later then others. But if it means that console x release date = more power --> WiiU < XBOX3 < PS4
but no very noticeable differences in image output i think.
IMO most important things in next gen console to outsell others =
- Content (movies, series, apps, DLC)
- AAA Games
- Real 3rd party support for both content as (AAA) Games
- Good/perfect online foundation ( equal to or better than x360 Live)
- 1080p output, at least 30 fps or more
- 3D capability (not as a nr1 priority)
- Backwards compatibility (equal to or better than Nintendo's virtual console, maybe even HD and/or 3D remakes)
- Innovation in gameplay (like WiiU), not only graphics. If you are a graphics whore...buy a pc. in the hope that not every game will use it, only when it's an improvement to the game.
- Consumer Friendly Price = Quality
Nintendo WiiU will rule (a fair critic = le me = Nintendo fanboy )
Looking forward to reply's........Nuff Said (^_,^)

I personally think the PS4 will be the most powerful because Sony will want to keep that image of having the most powerful console like they do with the PS3. |
ive been a PS fan for all three of there gens and one thing that i wanted after the ps2 was for them to have that b/c both ps1 and two didnt have the superior looking multiplats for the majority of them
i think for me atleast thats where most of my SW comes from as for exclusives i believe that for both gens each console had there pros and cons, yes even for this one between the X-box and PS3 so i would say that there exclusives are about on par with each other. For your comment about sony and there image well, for this gen if you look at them on paper PS3 does have some type of advantage but you also cant forget that the X-box has and advantage with its extra 10mb of edram and the rest of its ram isnt forced to be split in half, its media drive hasnt really been much of a hindrance until recently with a few games being split up on multiple disks most of all this gen 360 and quite a few PS3 exclusives fit on DVD. In the end i dont think the PS3 was really the most powerful this gen b/c when i view a console as most powerful the majority of the SW must be superior to there rest of the consoles, in the case of PC's for pretty much every gen and the 360 for this gen console wise
for your question i think it will be MS's console that the majority of the SW will be superior on again
