Court OKs Barring High IQs for Cops

A man whose bid to become a police officer was rejected after he scored too high on an intelligence test has lost an appeal in his federal lawsuit against the city.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld a lower court’s decision that the city did not discriminate against Robert Jordan because the same standards were applied to everyone who took the test.

“This kind of puts an official face on discrimination in America against people of a certain class,” Jordan said today from his Waterford home. “I maintain you have no more control over your basic intelligence than your eye color or your gender or anything else.”

He said he does not plan to take any further legal action.

Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took the exam in 1996 and scored 33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125. But New London police interviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27, on the theory that those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training.

Most Cops Just Above Normal The average score nationally for police officers is 21 to 22, the equivalent of an IQ of 104, or just a little above average.

Jordan alleged his rejection from the police force was discrimination. He sued the city, saying his civil rights were violated because he was denied equal protection under the law.

But the U.S. District Court found that New London had “shown a rational basis for the policy.” In a ruling dated Aug. 23, the 2nd Circuit agreed. The court said the policy might be unwise but was a rational way to reduce job turnover.

Jordan has worked as a prison guard since he took the test.

Why would they reject smart people in the first place? They don't want intelligent policemen or what?

Police training is exepensive and people with high Iqs tend to be pretty wishy washy and get bored eaisly.

Saying the dude was "smart" is an understatement of his IQ.

125 is about 95th percentile.

if you're smart, you're probably over qualified.

But that's not fair. The guy wanted to become a cop and couldn't because the authorities thought he could get bored which is really, unfair. He may not get bored either. Or he may stick to the job even after getting bored. Or even a person with a lower IQ can get bored/leave the job.

'on the theory that those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training.'

Or they are smart enough to realize the system is to fked up and decide to either not arrest certain people, or try to commit a diabolical crime themselves, and the rest of the department won't be smart enough to figure it out.

It's easier to have dumb people do your bidding, then to have.... well....

Oh i'd use a different system to test whether or not he'd get bored, but I wouldn't say it was unfair.

A person with a lower Iq can get bored/leave the job, but they're less likely to, and by "Lower Iq" lets keep in mind that "lower Iq" would still qualify somone as "Smart".

I mean, if Person A and Person B are equally qualfied and Person B has a higher chance of getting bored and leaving, why wouldn't you go with Person A?

One mistake people make about IQ is thinking that higher = better.  When in reality IQ is much more like a "Requirement" test.

Like, you usually need a 110 to graduate with a bachelors degree in college, but past that 110, having a 115 isn't really any different then having a 145 in terms of success getting said degree.

Being a cop, I'm guessing the Iq required is lower then a college graduate.

All I can do is shake my head. What a retarded policy, not accepting him for scoring too high on the tests. So now there's affirmative action for dumb/mediocre people.

Based on a theory with no real factual documented evidence or even a simple test.
