Its already slim, why would they make a "Super Slim"?

I think it would be more efficient if they lowered the price tag eventually around early 2013 or so.

Because they can. PS2 is on its 18th hardware revision. Even though most were just changing around the guts, some were cosmetic. The newer slims looks different than the older slims.

Take out the power brick and they'll have a console slightly smaller than the first PS2.

As of Version 17 of the PS2 the power supply is integrated. Making the PSU external would be a big mistake. Bricks suck, and they can obviously make small internal PSU's since the PS2 slim has one.

Ok in that case they should make a smaller slim or a slimmer slim as long as they can make the Cell and RSX smaller.

Wouldn't a slimmer PS3 make it more prone to overheating? Unless they manage to shove a bigger fan in there.

Nope. The current chasis design is designed for a 65nm RSX and 45nm Cell with a 250w PSU. With the second gen slim (CECH-2100a/b) they cut the RSX down to 40nm. With CECH-3000a/b (160GB and 320GB models) they cut the PSU down to 230w, made the fan smaller, and removed some other power draining sources (such as the lights on the front of the console). They chasis hasn't changed at all even though power consumption has dipped a ton since the original slim. Power consumption when playing games has gone down by almost 10w since the original 120GB slim. And with an integrated Cell+RSX they could cut it down even more. And Sony takes heat seriously, the PS2 slim never overheats and it has the smallest fan I've even seen (when I tore one apart). PS3 slim rarely overheats unless filled with dust and it has a 3.2GHz Cell that pours out heat and an RSX based off a crap design that also pours out heat. And it has a big SLOW fan (which is why its so quiet). They ain't gonna do a first gen X360 mistake where they just plop a fan at the back and slap 2 puny heatsinks over the CPU and GPU and hope it works.

In fact, look at this heat system:

The slim has a genious cooling design that uses 1 fan for the chips and PSU.

The fatty has an epic system as well, although its confusing:

Thats only the heasink for the RSX and Cell, its the best picture I could find. That doesn't even include the huge fan or PSU cooling system.

i was hoping someone like you could come in and take us through what they could do!

Yeah VettDude is awesome. There used to be another guy and his username used to begin with "Vette". Where is he? His PSN ID is BIG_Daddy_99. He hasn't posted in aaaages.

If anything id say the opposite, to make it a lot smaller they could remove the power pack and make it external like the 360/ps2/wii have done, therefor not needing as big fans inside to cool it down, with the newer ps3's they have the smaller cell thats being used, which again creates less heat

They could... but why?

If done right it would make the PS3 cheaper to manufacture and it should only have a positive impact on sales. (even if its just partially offsetting a decline)

Anyway if SONY managed to put the CELL and RSX together with a single heatsink and use an external power supply it would greatly reduce the heat generated by the console allowing SONY to reduce the fan size or possibly even removing the fan.

Also the last re-design of the PS3 seems to be from mid-2011 when the CECH30XXB models were released and that was mostly updating the mainboard and fan to align with the changes made since the original slim redesign (CECH20XXA).

Yeah I think they might have figured out how to lower manufacturing costs again. Maybe this years unnecessary price cut was in preparation for that?
